Picture 1 Post 59

By: Nicole Tello, Houston American Youth Leader

Today we visited a placed called San Martín de Puzhio. There we learned about Plan International, this organization focuses on the well-being of children and teenagers.

History of Plan International
Plan was created in 1937 during the Spanish Civil War. Its sole purpose was to provide food, shelter and education for the children who were victims of this war.

During World War 2 Plan worked in England, they cared for children who were banished from all of Europe.

Traditions and culture of Puzhio
In Puzhio there is a handful of religious traditions. Below are the ones I found most interesting.

Al Divino Niño: in December the families of Puzhio worship Baby Jesus with different religious rituals.
Fiesta de las Cruces: women and men from the town travel to Chordeleg to participate in mass and the blessing of the crosses every 3rd of May.
In Puzhio the making of Panama hats have been passed from one generation to another. The town has lived off these Panama hats, but once they realized the art of making these hats wasn’t well payed the women of the town decided to create an association to defend their work formulate its commercialization. In the beginning 300 women were interested in joining the association, but as time went by they all dispersed. Now there are 60 women who want others to join.

In Puzhio I had a great time learning about their culture, Plan, and getting to know some of the curious children.
