It’s so hard to believe that we have already finished our second-to-last week in communities! Meghan’s route has been busy having a fun and successful summer. In Etla Central, Sophia, Joy, and Rachael are keeping busy with talleres about amaranth and food sovereignty, which are very popular with the local kids. Their CBIP is well underway, with recycling bins for the school they are working with already purchased and a workshop about worm composting with our partner agency CAMPO set for next week. The girls also had a chance to visit the Guelaguetza, a celebration of Oaxaca dance, music, food, and culture, with their host family. In Santo Domingo, Alex and Parker’s talleres have been going well and they are working very closely with two enthusiastic local volunteers. They have already made great progress on their CBIP, and have received almost 100 donated books for the community library! In their free time, Alex and Parker enjoy playing soccer with their host brother Angel and learning to make quesadillas, atole, and other yummy foods with their host mother. In Tejotepec, Maddie, Marvin, and Alison are hard at work on their CBIP, with a successful community workshop about environmental health and the separation of trash already behind them and another one set for this week. This week, they were busy teaching kids in their talleres about community and personal health with help from their local doctora. The doctora and host family also organized a special early birthday party for Marvin, featuring tlayudas (a popular Oaxacan dish involving tortillas, beans, cheese, avocado, radishes, and chorizo) and a yummy apple cake. All the volunteers are having a wonderful time in their communities and can’t believe that the summer is already winding down!
