On July 20th, all participants left their Nicaraguan homes and came with local youth volunteers, their host families and other friends from the community to the Despedida, or goodbye party, in Matagalpa. It was an afternoon to celebrate everything that we have achieved together and say our final goodbyes to the special people that we have met here. Local youth presented what being a local volunteer means to them and international participants and community members presented dances and songs. In the words of one of our local youth volunteers, “Recuérdense que hoy no es una despedida si no un ‘Hasta Pronto,” or in English, “Remember that today is not a goodbye but a ‘see you later.’”
