Picture 1 Post 62

By Jonathan Tenney, Houston American Youth Leader

Going to Ecuador is very exciting, and if you ever have an opportunity, it is worth taking. But, before you start packing your bags, there are some things you should know.

1. Don’t flush toilet paper down the toilet! Most of the toilets in Ecuador will clog if you try flushing toilet paper. There will be a trashcan near the trashcan for toilet paper.

2. In public bathrooms there is usually one giant roll of toilet paper outside the stall, so before you start doing your business, make sure you supply yourself with enough toilet paper to last you one trip to the toilet. In some cases, bathrooms can be entirely out of toilet paper, so it is a good idea to bring your own roll of toilet paper with you in your bag.

3. Bring soap and hand sanitizer. In addition to bathrooms sometimes not having toilet paper, sometimes there isn’t soap, and if you want to avoid becoming sick, you will need to consistently wash your hands. You should bring hand sanitizer just in case you are somewhere where water is not at hand, and it is very useful to have soap for washing off things such as dirt, where hand sanitizer won’t quite do the job.

4. Using buses to get around the city is very useful, but before you do so, there are a few that you should know. One, it costs 25 cents to ride the bus. Second, you need to be quick to enter, pay, and find a spot because if you don’t, you may lose your step when the bus starts to move and you have nothing to keep your balance with. Lastly, people exit out from the back of the bus, not the front.

Ecuador is a wonderful country with rich history and diverse cultures. If you go, make sure to explore with the time you have.
