Piccture 1 Post 60

By Magdalena Gutierrez, Houston American Youth Leader

As most of us acknowledge, christianity is one of the world’s universalizing religions. In Cuenca, Ecuador, 75% of the population is roman catholic. Two, well known, churches in the beautiful Cuenca are San Blas and The Cathedral. The Cathedral has many different architecture styles in the building, mainly romesque revival. The structure of the Cathedral does not support the massive building. Both San Blas and the Cathedral are ancient.

Here in Ecuador some common dishes are guinea pig, pork, corn and potatoes. People here consume lots of natural waters, such as tomate de árbol, mora and papaya.

Majority of the people in Cuenca travel by the bus or walk to their destinations. Automobiles are used as well, but not as much. The way people ride the bus here is to enter through the front and exit through the back.

A unique part of the culture is the handcrafts. A handful of people make beautiful scarfs, necklaces, earrings and bracelets. Certain areas are known for making specific ítems. For example, in Chordeleg they are known for making gold and silver jewelry.

In Cuenca the people speak a combination of spanish and Kichwa. For example, they use “wawa,” which means baby, or “chompa,”which means a jacket. Something that is very noticeable is the amount of time people spend outdoors. There are also public events such as free music fesitivals at public parks. Cuenca is an admirable city and I couldn’t have asked for a better trip.
