VOICES OF AMIGOS

Making a Lasting Impact

If you are interested in international volunteering, you are probably aware that there are a lot of options available to choose from. How can you be sure that you will pick an organization that is truly dedicated to making a real difference? You have come to the right place because AMIGOS is that program!

Here are three reasons why AMIGOS is undeniably unique and extremely effective:

  1. We believe in the power of collaboration. We work with international, national, and local partner agencies with the goal of supporting ongoing, sustainable community and youth development efforts. Currently, we are partnering with more than 30 local organizations to ensure that the work of our participants’ supports continuing efforts at the community level. AMIGOS works with program partners to determine the focus, location and size of projects, taking into consideration local community interests, safety, and the potential for successful outcomes. An example of such exemplary partnership is our placement in Yucatan, Mexico. The theme of this project is environmental sustainability and includes work with four different community partners. Two of them are El Centro Comunitario de Yaxunah, an organization that promotes sustainable development and community led cultural tourism in indigenous Mayan communities and El Fundación Haciendas del Mundo Maya, an organization that uses an interdisciplinary, holistic approach to community development in the following areas: Human Development, Natural Resources, Housing and Infrastructure, Social Enterprises, Education, and Health.
  2. Many of our teams are about 50% American youth and 50% Latin American youth. For the year 2015 we had a total of 524 American youth and 681 Latin American youth participate in AMIGOS. How incredible is that? All of our participants both American and Latin American get to work hand in hand, learn, and grow with one another.
  3. We are focused. We focus on Latin America and we focus on youth ages 16-25. This is important because we have been perfecting our programs for 50 years and we can say we are experts at youth development. We are dedicated to ensuring that our placements will last and that the communities can truly take ownership in the initiatives and programs that are started while the youth are there.

With over 50 years of experience under our belt, we know our methods are tried and true. If you truly want to make a difference AMIGOS is the program for you!DSC01978
