One of the most exciting aspects of our midterm was that it was a surprise! Participants were told that they would only be able meet together with the other participants in their supervisor’s routes, and that each route would be meeting in separate locations. Originally, that was the plan too. But after everyone became so close to one another at Briefing, we knew that staff had to organize an event for the entire project. And what better place to have a surprise midterm than one of the Seven Wonders of the World? So for the last week, Supervisors worked to plan and organize the Midterm at Chichen Itza.

Participants and supervisors left community early Thursday morning to make our way to Chichen Itza. With each new group that arrived, the participants become more and more excited to see one another. With everyone finally gathered together, our group entered the archaeological zone and spent the next almost 2 hours marveling at the Mayan ruins, taking selfies, and even buying a few souvenirs.

After the ruins, we took taxis to the nearby city of Piste to eat lunch at an amazing (and air-conditioned!!!) restaurant. Following lunch, participants were split up into routes and with their supervisors spent some time reflecting on their experience so far, and brainstorming ideas to make the remainder of their time in community even more fantastic. Lastly, we ended the day with ice cream, a little bit more shopping, a trip to the internet cafe, and a few bittersweet goodbyes before returning to community.
