The priority application deadline is March 15th for fall 2018!
Get to know the land of lakes and volcanoes as you settle into your internship at one of our partner agencies and work on a collaborative service project. Live like a local in León, a college town near the Pacific coast of Nicaragua. Home to many museums, colonial churches, and cafes, it is a culturally rich hub of activity. Spend an afternoon studying Spanish in your hammock or take a weekend trip to relax on the beach.

AMIGOS history in region

AMIGOS has worked in Nicaragua since 1970. Our Gap Program opened in León in 2012.

Program Features

You’ll be enrolled in Spanish courses to equip you with the language skills you need to succeed and supplement your existing knowledge.
You’ll take part in our engaging training to prepare for your gap experience. Come ready to challenge your preconceptions, learn positive community development strategies, and have a blast!
You’ll be placed in an internship at one of our partner agencies. Here, you’ll spend 30+ hours a week working on projects that allow you to gain real-life work experience in a culture different from your own.
Work directly with your partner agency to plan, design, and execute a sustainable community-based project. Use your imagination, energy, and ingenuity to develop a proposal, raise resources, and watch the project come to life!
Live with a local host family for your entire stay and become a part of the community. Your host family will be an invaluable guide as you get to know your new home. Take full advantage of your time together, learning local recipes and hearing their perspectives.
Come together with your fellow gap participants to talk about your experience, discuss challenges and successes that you’ve encountered, and build skills that you’ll use in your gap year and beyond.
