We take care of our participants, staff, and families. For over 50 years we have put safety above all else. Our protocols, procedures, and 24/7 team of staff, physicians, and mental health specialists carefully follow each participant and are designed to meet any need that may arise.

The AMIGOS Difference: Three Tiers of Support

  • AMIGOS has a professional staff team dedicated to ensuring that all participants receive premium health screening; monitoring media and industry updates in all our host countries; providing pre-departure health and safety trainings; and reviewing in-country health procedures to ensure they continue to exceed industry standards.
  • AMIGOS staff monitor media and industry-specific news such as the US State Department, Overseas Security Advisory Council (OSAC), Centers for Disease Control, Pro-Med, TravelGuard, Hotspots, and other regional sources for health, safety, and risk assessments on all of our host countries.
  • AMIGOS has risk reduction policies addressing swimming events, driving, confidentiality, theft, and privacy of individuals’ records, to name a few.
  • The 24/7 On Call system is run out of our National Office, supporting all projects, chapters, and parents. All parents have access to this system as needed.
  • AMIGOS has working relationships with all US Embassies to register all participants ensuring all protocols incorporate country-specific steps in maintaining emergency procedure plans.
  • Staff works closely with local partner agency representatives and Peace Corps offices to establish work area safety plans tracking political, social, and economic events, as well as regional health and safety statistics.
  • Every week participants check in with staff members in order to monitor physical and emotional well-being, and identify any areas of improvement
  • AMIGOS has a rigorous host community selection criteria and host family contract. Working with our partner agencies, we screen each family and carefully ensure that it meets our participant placement criteria.  Every participant’s meal plan is well-established, sleeping arrangements meet organizational requirements, and a thorough emergency communication and action plan is prepared incorporating procedures for 9 or more levels of safety planning.
  • AMIGOS standards of conduct are established to ensure the health and safety of our participants while meeting the needs of participants at varying ages and levels of experience.

Our health screening process ensures that a health practitioner reviews any challenges you may have over the course of the summer. Through this process they may also speak with you and your family about how to best handle allergies or medications in the field.
