This past week marked Participants’ first week in community. Everyone had lots of fun meeting and getting to know their host families and settling into the communities they’ll be living in for the next six weeks. Here are some personal highlights shared by volunteers:

“My first few days have been crazy. I live with a family of four, but it feels much bigger because there are always more family and friends around the house. My house is in a more urban area with a main street that always has people passing by. For Father’s Day, my family took me to a celebration on the other side of the community. It started a little slowly, but then they brought bulls in on a truck that barely fit in the backyard. Over a period of six hours, there was bull riding, dancing, and other craziness.”

“We started our meal plan today, and we ate with a boy named Samuel’s family. Afterwards, his grandpa handed me an avocado and bid us on our way!”

“I’ve seen a lot of cool stuff in the past five days I’ve been in community: a Paraguayan cowboy, volleyball played only with your legs and head, and kids who play soccer better than friends I know who have played soccer all their lives.”

“My community, Rincon, is the perfect place to eat oranges, journal near an arroyo (river), and watch beautiful sunsets.”

We can’t wait to hear more great stories from our Participants as the weeks go on!
