VOICES OF AMIGOS

Torneo VIDA//Life Tournament

By Jenko Del Rosario Loor, 2015 Ecuador Youth Ambassador

Programs Blog 2Jenko was selected from more than 300 applicants to represent Ecuador in Houston last year. Upon returning home from his International training and exchange, Jenko implemented a Community Based Initiative in his home community. Below Jenko describes his CBI.

This initiative worked at empowering adolescents in five communities in southern coastal Ecuador. It addressed the benefits of knowing everything related to HIV through the use of play techniques such as football, collective games, role playing and community rounds, with two workshops per community.

The project sought to eliminate taboos young people have about the ways of infection and false information. Additionally to improve inclusion for virus carriers while equally working on enhancing personal care regarding sexual and reproductive health. An important piece was to always emphasize sexual rights, reproductive health, family planning and life planning.

To close the project we held a collective sports tournament where all participants of the workshops demonstrated the knowledge gained from participation. All participants were given uniforms and teams were awarded trophies and sports equipment. The tournament thus, promotes sports activities that contribute to the health of communities and the use of leisure time to create healthy communities.
