Picture 1 Post 13
Hi, we’re Maddie and Ali. We’re both from the San Francisco Bay Area, and we’re seventeen years old. We’ve spent the summer in Santa Maria Tejotepec, living together with the same host family. We’ve had an incredible AMIGOS experience; we’ve met a lot of kind people and made a very memorable connection with our host family. Our host mom, Margarita, is one of the sweetest people we’ve ever met, and we’ve enjoyed eating cena, or dinner, with her every night. Another memorable thing has been having a rotating meal plan. This means that we eat almuerzo and comida (brunch and lunch) with a different family every day. Through our rotating meal plan, we have been able to meet most people in our community and learn about the local culture from a wide variety of perspectives.

After a summer full of change and cultural adjustment, we have grown as leaders and learned so much. We have also found a new appreciation for our culture at home as well as the beautiful culture of Oaxaca. We can’t wait to come back to the US and share our experiences. We’ll be returning with knowledge of another way of life, important leadership skills, and connections with people from all different parts of the world.

Neither of us are really sure what we will be doing in the future. However, we do know that Amigos has opened doors for us with our Spanish and the connections we have made this summer.

Hola! Somos Maddie y Ali.
