“The sizzling sound of dough and hot oil and the mouthwatering smell of fried goods wafting through the night air; the components that make up tortillas. We’ve been with our family for a week and a half, and as soon as we tried tortillas, we fell in love. Our host mom taught us how to make them one night as we sat around the fire under the stars, sipping steaming mate. Although called tortillas, these resemble deep fried pancakes rather than flatbread. Learning how to cook this Paraguayan delicacy allowed us to bond with our host mom, and become more accepted into the family.”
