In our second campamento at Reserva Forestal Rio Macho, volunteers from Talia and Michaela’s routes and Casa de la Juventud continued manual labor throughout the park, including trail work, land leveling an area to build a kitchen, and creating a driveway. The work was tough, but the volunteers stayed motivated throughout the week!

In the afternoons, the volunteers participated in various educational and recreational activities that helped build leadership skills and form close bonds between the American and Tico volunteers. We learned about the park’s wildlife and distinct characteristics from one of the park rangers that allowed us to appreciate the unique environment of Rio Macho.

Many endured the cold temperatures by drinking coffee and arroz con leche while playing card games together and watching The Book of Life. Others participated in a mejenga (Costa Rican slang for an informal and friendly soccer game) with some locals. We also had an intense Costa Rican “rally” that consisted of various obstacles and a whole lot of mud! Each night was full of dancing bachata and relaxing around the fire. Each commission comprised of both AMIGOS and Tico volunteers as they organized and led various dinamicas, including a lip sync competition that left everyone laughing. On our free day, we went on a beautiful five-hour hike in the park where we came across a 700 year old tree and an incredible waterfall! We were all exhausted after the full week of hard work and fun, but everyone left the park with a smile on their face!
