Trusted by Families and Youth Travel Experts
AMIGOS has run international youth volunteer programs since 1965. Our health and safety systems and safeguards are based on knowledge and expertise built over five decades. Our longstanding relationships with local organizations in host countries are built on a foundation of mutual respect and enable us to work with trusted local partners. The trust we have built in the region means that each volunteer’s experience is safer, more meaningful, and more powerful.
AMIGOS program staff develop personalized emergency plans for each volunteer and host community location. Staff members are available 24/7 to respond to any health or safety issue.
For 60+ years, AMIGOS has maintained and refined our in-house Health & Safety On-Call System. Led by team members with 20+ years of experience in our industry, our 24/7 On-Call team supports students and project staff with any need.
AMIGOS has a team of medical and mental health professionals who provide guidance and counsel for our staff. Our medical on-call doctors are led by the AMIGOS Medical Director, and our mental health specialists are supported by our Mental Health Director for the duration of our programs.
AMIGOS staff conduct country and region specific risk assessments on a regular basis, and prepare emergency plans for each site. Program leaders meet regularly with partner agency leaders and other in-country risk experts to develop emergency action plans and safety guidelines specific to the project area.

Six Reasons to Join
“AMIGOS has not only made me more open-minded towards people who come from different backgrounds, but has also made me realize how similar we all are, no matter where we come from.”
“The fact that I was even given the opportunity to experience a new culture gave me a recognition of the fact that I can do so much and that the world is out there, just waiting to be ventured into.”
“My host sister and local youth leader helped me explore a part of myself that I hadn’t known before, and encouraged me to keep growing and flourishing into a leading young woman. We not only lived together, but worked, planned, and had fun together. I can’t put into words how much she means to me.”
“One thing that really sets AMIGOS apart from most volunteer organizations is how involved the community is. I loved the ideas community members came up with as projects to do, ideas to fundraise, and how they became leaders, as well as me and my partner. The idea is not for Americans to come in and “help” the community, it is to give people an opportunity to become leaders and make a great change that will last a very long time.”
“My participation with AMIGOS didn’t stop when I returned home after that summer experience. I spent the following summer in Guanajuato, Mexico helping fund the septic tank for a local health clinic, and spent the summer after that as a project supervisor, responsible for the health and safety of 9 volunteers. I am currently in my 7th year serving on the Board of Directors of my local AMIGOS chapter.”
“My favorite part of the program was growing a connection with the local youth leaders as well as my fellow volunteers. Being able to connect with people from another country, culture, and native language was truly beautiful to experience. I gained a genuine connection with each one of them and made memories that will stay in my heart forever.”
