Why Amigos

AMIGOS doesn’t just send young people somewhere different. It sends them somewhere that changes who they are.

A Real Experiencia With Real Impact

AMIGOS gives participants the space to become fully present in a new community. With distance from screens and familiar distractions, they step into daily life abroad, contribute to work that matters, and return home with lasting, real growth.

Develop leadership skills

Leadership Development

Genuine responsibility begins at the start, as participants step into service projects, youth activities, and real-time problem-solving.

Partner with local organizations

In-Country Partnerships

Projects are developed in partnership with local organizations that work year-round to understand community needs, strengths, and priorities.

Work on meaningful service projects

Meaningful Service Projects

Participants work on practical projects developed with community partners to address real needs, ranging from reforestation to school improvements.

Supportive Host Families

Living as part of a local family is at the heart of the experience* and one of its most meaningful and lasting aspects.

Make long term connections with other volunteers and locals

Long-Term Growth & Connections

Participants return home with greater confidence, lasting relationships, and a place in a network of 32,000+ alumni.

It Starts With Local Communities

Since 1965, AMIGOS participants have experienced meaningful connections with communities across Latin America through service, cultural exchange, and shared learning.

Collaboration with Latin American Youth

We create growth opportunities for Latin American youth through summer service programs, leadership exchanges like the Youth Ambassadors Program, and virtual initiatives that foster cross-cultural collaboration. These experiences support young leaders as they design and lead community-driven service projects in their own regions.

Experiencia con familia anfitriona

Living with a host family* gives participants a genuine sense of belonging and a deeper connection to daily community life. Within the care of these relationships, participants strengthen their foreign language skills, develop cross-cultural connections that often last a lifetime, and experience a new culture in a unique and personal way.

Preguntas frecuentes

Clear answers to the questions families ask most about AMIGOS.

Conozca las experiencias de voluntarios y familias

“His host family called him the day after he got home. At first I couldn’t imagine why they would do that. Then it occurred to me that they were also now family. They miss him, too. It made me wish I knew them. It made me cry. I read somewhere, and always agreed, that a child can never have too many people who love them.”

Jean G, AMIGOS Nicaragua Parent
San Diego, CA

“The time I spent with my host family changed my life for the better. They taught me so much about the world, language, humility, and culture, and through that I learned about myself.”

Amelia D, 2026 Paraguay Volunteer
San Francisco, CA
