HOUSTON, TX. — May 7, 2020 — Houston nonprofit Amigos de las Américas (AMIGOS) is proud to announce their very first virtual program, the Community Impact Project. This six week online initiative gives students the opportunity to connect across cultures while they support their local communities during the COVID-19 pandemic. Participating students will engage with peers in the U.S. and Latin America to design globally and locally-minded service projects and develop real-life leadership skills.

“Today’s youth will be a generation defined by this pandemic,” said Sara Nathan, President & CEO. “But they will also be defined by their incredible capacity to come together in service to one another. Our goal is to empower the young leaders who will carry this work forward so that they can support those in need during this pandemic and construct a more inclusive and open world after it subsides.”

Founded in 1965, AMIGOS is the safest, most authentic service and immersion program in Latin America and the United States for ages 13 to 22. Due to COVID-19, AMIGOS suspended its 2020 summer and gap year programming. The AMIGOS team knew its leadership training was needed by young adults now more than ever, and the Community Impact Project was born.

The AMIGOS Community Impact Project gives young adults the chance to join the program from home at a time when global connection and local action are more important than ever. The Community Impact Project creates connections through online modules, virtual meetups, and mentorship by a member of the AMIGOS network. Each module will foster different strategic approaches to cultural connection, project management, and personal leadership.

Volunteers will need English proficiency and one year of Spanish (or equivalent). The program is open to 15–19-year-olds, and has special introductory pricing of $575. Financial assistance is also available!
