About the Area: La Costa 2022
I write to you from the coast of Ecuador, province of Manabí, and more specifically, from the beautiful patio of one of our lodges and partners in everything we will do here in the protected area of the Machalilla National Park. The waves crash, the birds tweet, and the fog rolls in like a blanket over the sea.
During the next three weeks, you will have the opportunity to get to know two different regions along the coast – San Vicente and Puerto Lopez. As you likely know, Ecuador is home to incredible biodiversity, and I’m not just talking about the Ecuadorian Amazon and the Galapagos Islands. The areas we will be visiting are home to the world’s second-smallest hummingbird, one of the largest identified populations of manta rays, and the largest nesting site for Caray turtles in all of South America!
In the past few days, I have learned something new in every conservation – from regional linguistic variations to the medicinal uses of native plants to Ecuadorian holidays and history. The people here are a wealth of knowledge, and have been generous with their time, coffees, and enthusiasm for environmental conversation. If you think the natural marvels are impressive, wait until you meet some of our guides!
Turtles love it here; whales love it here; and I have no doubt you will too!

Te escribo desde La Costa de Ecuador, provincia de Manabí, y más específicamente, desde el patio lindo de uno de nuestras hospedajes y socios en todo lo que haremos aquí en el área protegida del parque nacional de Machalilla. Las olas rompen, los pájaros tuitean, y la garua se arrastra como una cobija sobre el mar.
Durante las próximas tres semanas, Uds. tendrán la oportunidad de conocer dos regiones distintas a lo largo de la costa – San Vicente y Puerto López. Como probablemente ya sepan, Ecuador alberga una biodiversidad increíble, y no me refiero solo a la Amazonía ecuatoriana y las Islas Galápagos. ¡Las áreas que visitaremos hospedan el segundo colibrí más pequeño del mundo, una de las poblaciones identificadas más grandes de mantarrayas, y el sitio de anidación más grande para las tortugas Caray en toda América del Sur!
En los últimos días, aprendí algo nuevo en cada conservación, desde las variaciones lingüísticas regionales hasta los usos medicinales de las plantas nativas y las festividades y la historia ecuatoriana. Las personas aquí tienen un gran conocimiento y han sido generosas con su tiempo, sus cafecitos, y su entusiasmo por la conversación ambiental. Si creen que las maravillas naturales son impresionantes, ¡esperan hasta que conozcan a algunos de nuestros guías!
A las tortugas les encanta este sitio; a las ballenas les encanta este sitio; y no tengo ninguna duda de que Uds. también lo harán!
