INTRODUCTION TO AMIGOS FOR EDUCATORS

AMIGOS is a transformative program that empowers students to make a meaningful impact through community service in Latin American countries, while fully immersing themselves in vibrant new cultures. By living with host families and working on service-driven projects, students not only develop essential leadership skills but also gain a profound understanding of global issues and their role in creating positive change.

Our mission is to cultivate global citizenship and foster personal growth through authentic experiences. AMIGOS programs not only broaden a student’s global perspective but also sets them on a path toward academic and career success.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

AMIGOS offers programs ranging from 2 to 6 weeks for students ages 13-22, with various locations throughout Latin America. This summer, participants can choose from programs in Costa Rica, Panama, Paraguay, and the Dominican Republic, each featuring unique themes such as Biodiversity, Sustainability, and Cultural Connections, among many others.

Testimonials

“I wrote about my experience as an AMIGOS volunteer in one of my college application essays, and several universities mentioned it in my acceptance letters that it stood out to them. AMIGOS not only gave me real-world skills and confidence but also helped me stand out as a college applicant.” – Jessica Toll, Alum & AMIGOS Senior Program Coordinator

“My AMIGOS experience opened a new path for me in life; I decided to take a gap year in Bolivia before starting college, which is something I never thought of doing before. Connecting with a new culture on such an authentic level not only taught me so much about Ecuador, but also myself and what I was capable of. I carry my experience with me every day as I connect with the new generation of Amigos and see these lessons reflected in their experiences, too.” – Emma Reagan, ’15 Alum & AMIGOS Bay Area Outreach Manager

“AMIGOS pushed me out of my introverted high school comfort zone into my unique leadership style and helped me become a more effective communicator. The leadership skills I gained from AMIGOS earned me a full tuition scholarship through the Posse Foundation at the University of Texas at Austin and ultimately through law school. Today, the empathy I practiced throughout my AMIGOS experiences have equipped me to better serve Houston communities through my current role at the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.” Ryan Thompson, Alum & Harris County Attorney
