Cartago y Caribe 2023: Meet the team!

Kiernan King, Project Director

Kiernan King is AMIGOS’ Project Director for the Cartago y Caribe project in Costa Rica! Kiernan’s career has been focused on international development and global health, beginning with his time as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Botswana from 2016-2019, where he co-facilitated programming for the education and prevention of HIV, primarily in young people ages 10-24. During this time, he screened STEPS films and coached Secondary School learners through the Grassroot Soccer curriculum. He also co-mentored teenagers in Teen Club, a psychosocial support group for adolescents living with HIV (ALHIV). In this third year, he assisted with the data collection and analysis of a UNICEF-funded research project. In partnership with Botswana-Baylor Clinical Center of Excellence and Ministry of Health, the project was aimed at developing a Comprehensive Toolkit of Services for ALHIV. Previous roles also include serving as a Financial Analyst, a Supervisory Program Manager, Program Analyst, Resident Assistant for 2 years in the Freshman dorms, a Summer Camp Coordinator, Lifeguard and Economics tutor. While on the Youth Branch of the Office of HIV/AIDS at the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), Kiernan focused on analyzing data for DREAMS, an HIV prevention program targeting adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) in 14 Sub-Saharan African countries and Haiti.

Prior to Peace Corps, Kiernan worked at the Neighborhood Housing Services of South Florida, a nonprofit in Miami. As the Data Analysis Assistant, Kiernan used GIS software to contribute to the data team’s evaluation of conditions in Liberty City, and through his analysis, consulted action groups to better achieve desired outcomes. Kiernan has a passion for working with youth and using data to improve programs and is thrilled to be working with youth again this summer with AMIGOS! Kiernan holds both his Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Master of Public Administration from the University of Miami (Go Canes!) and is originally from Texas. In his free time, he enjoys cooking, playing volleyball, gardening, running and listening to podcasts. This will be his first time in Costa Rica and is excited to work on his Spanish and explore all the beauty the country has to offer. Pura vida!

 

¡Kiernan King es el nuevo Director de Proyecto de AMIGOS para Cartago y Caribe en Costa Rica! La carrera de Kiernan se ha centrado en el desarrollo internacional y la salud mundial, comenzando como especialista en desarrollo de capacidades de la sociedad civil en VIH/SIDA en el Cuerpo de Paz de Botswana. De 2016 a 2019, co-facilitó la programación para la educación y prevención del VIH, principalmente en jóvenes de 10 a 24 años. Durante este tiempo, ayudó con diversas actividades generadoras de ingresos, proyectó películas STEPS y facilitó debates importantes, entrenó a estudiantes de secundaria a través del plan de estudios Grassroot Soccer y fue mentor de adolescentes en Teen Club, un grupo de apoyo psicosocial para adolescentes que viven con el VIH ( ALHIV). En este tercer año, ayudó con la recopilación y el análisis de datos de un proyecto de investigación financiado por UNICEF en asociación con el Centro Clínico de Excelencia Botswana-Baylor y el Ministerio de Salud. El proyecto tenía como objetivo desarrollar un conjunto de herramientas integrales de servicios para ALHIV y Kiernan disfrutó mucho trabajar junto a los defensores de los jóvenes y se enorgulleció de ver su liderazgo de primera mano.

Después de su servicio en el Cuerpo de Paz, Kiernan trabajó en la Sección de Jóvenes dentro de la Oficina de VIH/SIDA en la Agencia de los Estados Unidos para el Desarrollo Internacional (USAID) y se centró en analizar datos para DREAMS, un programa de prevención del VIH dirigido a niñas adolescentes y mujeres jóvenes en 14 sub-Países del África sahariana y Haití. Los roles anteriores también incluyen servir como analista financiero, gerente de programas de supervisión, asistente residente, coordinador de campamentos de verano, salvavidas y tutor privado de economía. A Kiernan le apasiona trabajar con jóvenes y usar datos para mejorar los programas y está encantado de volver a trabajar con jóvenes este verano con AMIGOS! Kiernan tiene una Licenciatura en Economía y una Maestría en Administración Pública de la Universidad de Miami (¡Go Canes!) y es originario de San Antonio, Texas. En su tiempo libre, le gusta cocinar, jugar voleibol, hacer jardinería, correr y escuchar podcasts. Esta será su primera vez en Costa Rica y está emocionado de trabajar en su español y explorar toda la belleza que el país tiene para ofrecer. ¡Pura vida!

 

Associate Project Director: Verónica González

Hello! My name is Verónica González and I will be the Associate Project Director (APD) in Cartago and Caribe, Costa Rica this summer. I am from Paraguay and I am currently studying International Politics and Economics at Colorado College, with a minor in Chinese-Mandarin language. Despite it being my first time working with AMIGOS, I have a lot of experience as a volunteer in different non-profits. Interestingly, I tend to focus on education. I have been a volunteer English teacher since I was 16 years old. Also, on several occasions I helped as an interpreter for Medical missions with English speakers that provided free medical assistance in cities with high rates of medical necessity in my country.  

I am currently part of the student government of my university, which gives me a lot of pride because I am one of the few international students to participate. This allows me to be the voice for minorities, whether they are Latinos or international students, by making important decisions about what we want to improve in the university.  

I am very excited to work with the volunteers and the rest of the staff this summer! I love education and I think it is even better when we not only learn by educating ourselves but also when we get involved in activities that will help us grow a lot, in many aspects such as leadership, interpersonal relationships, problem solving and technical and soft skills! In my free time I love to dance hip hop, bike, spend time with friends, meet new people, and explore new mountains. I also like to learn/practice the languages I speak. Looking forward to seeing you soon! 

 

¡Hola! Me llamo Verónica González y mi cargo este verano será de Associate Project Director (APD) en Cartago y Caribe, Costa Rica. Soy de Paraguay y actualmente estoy estudiando Política Internacional y Economía en la universidad Colorado College, con una tecnicatura en el idioma chino-mandarin. A pesar de ser mi primera vez trabajando con AMIGOS, tengo bastante experiencia como voluntaria en diferentes organizaciones no gubernamentales. Curiosamente, me tiendo a enfocar en la educación. Fui profesora de inglés voluntaria desde los 16 años. También, intérprete de médicos de habla inglesa que proveían asistencia médica gratuita en ciudades con altos índices de necesidad médica en mi país. Actualmente soy parte del Gobierno de Estudiantes de mi universidad, lo cual me da bastante orgullo porque soy una de las pocas estudiantes internacionales en participar. Esto me permite dar voz a las minorías, ya sean latinas o de otros países, al tomar decisiones importantes acerca de qué queremos mejorar en la universidad. 

Estoy muy emocionada de trabajar con los voluntarios y el resto del staff este verano. Me encanta la educación y creo que es aún mejor cuando no sólo aprendemos educándonos sino también nos involucramos en actividades que nos ayudarán a crecer muchísimo, en muchos aspectos tales como liderazgo, relaciones interpersonales, resolución de problemas y habilidades técnicas y blandas. 

 En mi tiempo libre adoro bailar hip hop, andar en bici, pasar tiempo con amigos, conocer a nuevas personas y explorar nuevas montañas. También me gusta aprender/practicar los idiomas que hablo. ¡Nos vemos muy pronto! 

 

Project Supervisor: Brittany Santos

My name is Brittany Santos, and I am very excited to be project supervisor for Cartago y Caribe in Costa Rica this summer! I have participated with AMIGOS since my Junior Year of high school and it has been a life changing experience which I feel in love with. I attended the Ecuador: La Costa Program in 2021, participated in the Social Impact Accelerator in 2022, and the Costa Rica: Montañas y Mar Program in 2022. 
 
I am from Houston, Texas and I am currently attending the University of Texas at San Antonio, majoring in Criminal Justice with a double minor in Anthropology and Spanish. I have always loved volunteering, and have participated in activities with Ronald McDonald home, nursing homes, and homeless shelters. I have also been an Intern for The Children’s Museum of Houston, Amerigroup (health insurance company), and The National MS Society. 
 
In my spare time I enjoy playing softball, reading, discovering new parks, and watching documentaries. In general I enjoy learning more about different human societies and cultures and their development  of language through time. Connecting with different cultures has built me to view the world in different ways appreciating the differences of each culture. Pura Vida! 

¡Mi nombre es Brittany Santos y estoy muy emocionada de ser supervisora de proyectos para Cartago y Caribe en Costa Rica este verano! He participado con AMIGOS desde mi tercer año de secundaria y ha sido una experiencia que me ha cambiado la vida y de la que me siento enamorada. Asistí al Programa Ecuador: La Costa en 2021, participé en el Proyecto de Impacto Social 2022 y en el Programa Costa Rica: Montañas y Mar en el 2022. 
 
Soy de Houston, Texas y actualmente asisto a la Universidad de Texas en San Antonio y estudio Justicia Criminal con una doble especialización en Antropología y Español. Siempre me ha gustado el voluntariado y he participado en actividades con el hogar Ronald McDonald, hogares de tercera edad y refugios para personas sin hogar. También he sido pasante en The Children’s Museum of Houston, Amerigroup (compañía de seguros de salud) y The National MS Society. 
 
En mi tiempo libre disfruto jugar softball, leer, descubrir nuevos parques y ver documentales. En general, disfruto aprendiendo más sobre las diferentes sociedades y culturas humanas y su desarrollo del lenguaje a través del tiempo. Conectarse con diferentes culturas me ha ayudado a ver el mundo de diferentes maneras apreciando las diferencias de cada cultura. ¡Pura vida!  

 

Project Supervisor: Lucy Dabbs

Lucy is very excited to be the Project Supervisor for the Cartago & Caribe program in Costa Rica! Lucy is from British Columbia on the west coast of Canada. Growing up on a small island of 1,000 people, Lucy has always been interested in exploring the world to build a sense of empathy, respect, and community. In recent years she has thought a lot about what it means to travel as a tourist and how we can more authentically engage with different cultures. Living in a family without many resources, Lucy started her international experiences studying in China through high school exchange programs. She was later accepted to the United World Colleges movement (UWC) and studied in Japan for 2 years, until the pandemic. This school changed her perspective on intercultural experiences. Now Lucy has lived with families in China, Japan, and Yucatan, Mexico, and has a lot of motivation to share these types of opportunities with other youth.  

Lucy is a current student at College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor, Maine, USA. She studies Human Ecology with a focus on film, animation, education, language, and psychology. Right now she works in the Admissions office with international students and with the college’s Opportunity and Access program. Last year she was a Teaching Assistant at a program called “the Global Citizen’s Initiative” at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. She has had other jobs including at a chocolate factory (a very tasty experience), a ferry terminal, hotels, cafes, and as an assistant for a conservation centre at the base of the Rocky Mountains in Canada. 

 

¡Lucy está muy emocionada de ser la Supervisora de Proyecto para el programa Cartago y Caribe en Costa Rica! Lucy es de British Columbia, en la costa oeste de Canadá. Al crecer en una isla pequeña de 1,000 personas en Canadá, Lucy siempre ha estado interesada en explorar el mundo para desarrollar un sentido de empatía, respeto y comunidad. Recientemente, ha pensado mucho sobre lo que significa viajar como turista y cómo podemos conocer de forma más autentica las diferentes culturas. Viviendo en una familia sin muchos recursos, Lucy comenzó sus experiencias internacionales estudiando en China a través de intercambios de secundaria. Luego fue aceptada al movimiento de los United World Colleges (UWC) y estudió en Japón durante 2 años, hasta la pandemia. Esta oportunidad cambió su perspectiva sobre experiencias interculturales. Lucy ha vivido con familias en China, Japón, y Yucatán, México, y tiene muchas ganas de compartir oportunidades así con otros jóvenes.  

Lucy es un estudiante actual del College of the Atlantic en Bar Harbor, Maine, Estados Unidos. Estudia Ecología Humana con enfoque en cine, animación, educación, lenguaje, y psicología. Ahora trabaja en la oficina de Admisiones con estudiantes internacionales y con el programa de oportunidad y accesibilidad del colegio. El año pasado fue Asistente de Enseñanza en un programa llamado “Iniciativa Ciudadana Mundial” en la Universidad St. Andrews en Escocia, Reino Unido. Ha tenido otras trabajos incluyendo en una fábrica de chocolate (una experiencia muy sabrosa), un terminal de barco, hoteles, cafes, y como asistente en un centro de conservación en la base de las Montañas Rocosas en Canadá.
