Eva Kennedy, Project Director/Directora de Proyecto

Hi! My name is Eva Kennedy and I am thrilled to be the Project Director for the Coclé, Panama project. I am 27 years old from Chicago, Illinois. I love everything connected to nature and the earth, and I also like to run and do yoga. I worked as a special education teacher in Boston and Chicago for a total of 5 years. I love my job, and am deeply passionate about disability rights and equal education.

In addition to education, I am also dedicated to learning about and experiencing different cultures and languages. It was AMIGOS that sparked this passion. I started my AMIGOS journey at 16 years old as a participant in Azuay, Ecuador. This was my first time out of the United States and my first time in Latin America. I had such a meaningful experience that I was a participant in Matagalpa, Nicaragua the following year, and then a supervisor in Matagalpa in 2015. At 24, I decided to quit my teaching job in Boston, pack a backpack, and fly to Colombia. I spent a year traveling in South America, and then living and working in Mexico. During the pandemic, I returned to Chicago and spent two more years teaching. In July 2022 I moved to Buenos Aires, Argentina, and I have been here in Buenos Aires since then. AMIGOS has had a huge impact on the course of my life, and I am so excited to create that same immersive, powerful experience for all participants and staff in Cocle.

¡Hola! Soy Eva Kennedy, y estoy super animada para ser la directora del proyecto en Coclé, Panamá. Tengo 27 años y soy de Chicago, Illinois. Adoro todo lo que está conectado a la naturaleza y la tierra, y también me gusta correr y hacer yoga. Trabajé como maestra de educación especial con chicos con discapacidades por 5 años en Boston y Chicago. Amo mi trabajo, y me siento super apasionada sobre los derechos de las personas con discapacidades y la educación igualitaria.

Además de educación, también estoy muy dedicada a aprender y conocer diferentes culturas e idiomas. Fue AMIGOS quien encendió esta pasión. Empecé mi jornada con AMIGOS cuando tenía 16 años como participante en Azuay, Ecuador. Fue mi primera vez fuera de los Estados Unidos, y mi primera vez en Latinoamérica. Tuve una experiencia tan significativa que fui participante en Matagalpa, Nicaragua el año siguiente, y después supervisora en Matagalpa en 2015. Cuando tenía 24 años, decidí renunciar a mi trabajo como maestra en Boston, armar una mochila, y viajar a Colombia. Pasé un año explorando Sudamérica, y después viviendo y trabajando en México. Durante la pandemia, volví a Chicago y pasé 2 años más enseñando. En Julio 2022 me mudé a Buenos Aires, Argentina y he estado aquí en Buenos Aires desde Julio. AMIGOS ha tenido un gran impacto en el curso de mi vida, y estoy tan emocionada por crear esa misma experiencia inmersiva y poderosa para todos los participantes y miembros del equipo en Coclé!

 

Miguel, Associate Project Director/Subdirector de Proyecto

My name is Miguel Arauz, I am 26 years old and I was born in Quito, the capital of Ecuador. Since my youth, I have been passionate about community work and volunteering. Since I was in school, I was involved in social projects. As I grew older, my interest in volunteering and learning about different cultures grew and I explored various programs in other countries. I decided to study International Relations with the aim of knowing other perspectives of the world and the particularities of more countries.

After finishing university, I decided to continue studying in the Netherlands, where I met people from various countries and learned various perspectives on the world and how to improve it. In the Netherlands I specialized in human rights and international security. Over the years, I have volunteered at various foundations and have worked with young people eager to be heard and with the goal of changing the world. The most significant project I have worked on was in Río Verde, a small community in Ecuador. There, we work with AfroEcuadorian children and help the development of the community.

Currently I am excited to be part of the work of AMIGOS, in Penonomé. I believe that the work we do at AMIGOS with young people is of vital importance to allow a new generation of young leaders to propose new solutions to the needs of the contemporary world.

 

Mi nombre es Miguel Arauz, tengo 26 años y nací en Quito, la capital de Ecuador. Desde mi juventud me ha apasionado el trabajo comunitario y el voluntariado. Desde que estaba en el colegio estuve involucrado en proyectos sociales. Conforme fui creciendo, mi interés en el voluntariado y en conocer diferentes culturas fue creciendo y exploré varios programas en otros países. Decidí estudiar Relaciones Internacionales con el objetivo de conocer otras perspectivas del mundo y las particularidades de más países.

Después de terminar la universidad, decidí seguir estudiando en Países Bajos, donde conocí gente de varios países y conocí varias perspectivas sobre el mundo y como mejorarlo. En Países Bajos me especialicé en derechos humanos y seguridad internacional. A lo largo de los años he sido voluntario en diversas fundaciones y he trabajado con jóvenes ávidos por ser escuchados y con la meta de cambiar el mundo. El proyecto más significativo en el que he trabajado fue en Río Verde, una pequeña comunidad en Ecuador. Ahí trabajamos con niños afroecuatorianos y ayudamos al desarrollo de la comunidad.

Actualmente estoy emocionado de ser parte del trabajo de AMIGOS, en Penonomé. Creo que el trabajo que realizamos en AMIGOS con los jóvenes es de vital importancia para permitir que una nueva generación de jóvenes líderes propongan nuevas soluciones para las necesidades del mundo contemporáneo

 

Benedetta Barbiere, Project Supervisor/Supervisora de Proyecto

 

Ciao! My name is Benedetta and I am a 26 years old newly graduated student in international relations. I grew up in Rimini, Italy, a small town by the east coast. I am proudly an Italian citizen, but if someone asks me which is my home, I still struggle to give an answer. Since childhood, my curiosity pushed me to go abroad to meet new people, discover different cultures and push my limits. Somehow, I have always felt Rimini as a little too “tight” for me, and every time I would see the chance to leave my hometown, I would take it.

Now that I finally finished my academic career, I can put 100% of my energies in finding a job that satisfies my craving to travel around the world and find a new “home”.  I am passionate and enthusiastic, especially when I believe in the strength of certain values and when discussing ideas for a project that is important to me. Mostly, I seek work I can take pride in. I love unconventionality, going out of my comfort zone and enjoying every day the most (unfortunately, I am not a good long-term planner). The passion for traveling is one of the few things that unites people from all over the world, independently from their cultural or social background. To me, working with people coming from different countries and who share my same passion is a pure joy and I am grateful to have the opportunity to do this with AMIGOS.

¡Ciao! Me llamo Benedetta, tengo 26 años y soy licenciada en Relaciones Internacionales. Crecí en Rimini, Italia, una pequeña ciudad de la costa este. Soy orgullosamente ciudadana italiana, pero si alguien me pregunta cuál es mi hogar, aún me cuesta dar una respuesta. Desde niña, mi curiosidad me empujaba a salir al extranjero para conocer gente nueva, descubrir culturas diferentes y superar mis límites. De alguna manera, siempre he sentido Rímini como demasiado “pequeña” para mí, y cada vez que veía la oportunidad de salir de mi ciudad natal, la aprovechaba.

Ahora que por fin he terminado mi carrera académica, puedo poner el 100% de mis energías en encontrar un trabajo que satisfaga mi deseo de viajar por el mundo y encontrar un nuevo hogar.  Soy apasionada y entusiasta, especialmente cuando creo en la fuerza de ciertos valores y cuando discuto ideas para un proyecto que es importante para mí. Lo que estoy buscando es un trabajo del que pueda sentirme orgullosa. Me encanta lo poco convencional, salir de mi zona de confort y disfrutar al máximo de cada día (por desgracia, no soy una buena planificadora a largo plazo). La pasión por viajar es una de las pocas cosas que une a personas de todo el mundo, independientemente de sus origen cultural o social. Para mí, trabajar con personas procedentes de distintos países y que comparten mí misma pasión es una pura alegría y estoy agradecida de tener la oportunidad de hacerlo con AMIGOS.

 

Emma Rosenberg, Project Supervisor/Supervisora de Proyecto

 

Hi everyone! I’m Emma and I’m from Oregon. I love to spend time in nature, walk, sing, play the guitar, and practice Spanish. I am a recent graduate of Portland State University where I majored in Sociology and Spanish with a minor in music. I am super passionate about mental health and hope to become a therapist.

I was an AMIGOS participant in 2018 on the Palmares project in Costa Rica where I had an amazing time. I loved getting to spend time with my host family and host community members, develop my Spanish skills, see the beautiful Costa Rican nature, and eat all the yummy food. I am super excited to be back with AMIGOS this year to support the participants in their experience!

 

¡Hola a todes! Soy Emma y soy de Oregon. Me encanta pasar tiempo en la naturaleza, caminar, cantar, tocar la guitarra, y practicar español. Recién me gradué de Portland State University donde estudié español, sociología, y música. Soy súper apasionada por la salud mental y quiero ser terapeuta.

Fui participante de AMIGOS en el 2018 en el proyecto Palmares en Costa Rica. Esta fue una experiencia increíble para mi. Me encantaba pasar tiempo con mi familia anfitriona y los miembros de la comunidad, desarrollar mis habilidades del español, ver la hermosa naturaleza costarricense, y probar la deliciosa comida. Me emociona mucho tener la oportunidad de conocer Panamá y apoyar a los participantes a tener una experiencia increíble!
