Here at FUDEBIOL, we just finished our first full week of community service work! We rotated groups on Sunday, and most of us now have new jobs.

We have four different volunteer groups here at FUDEBIOL–painting, plant nursery/fieldwork, cooking, and cleaning. We work from 7–11 am every day (except for Tuesdays, excursion days, and Wednesdays, free days) in our respective groups.

The painting group has been working on sanding and painting the main building where we sleep and eat, in order to make FUDEBIOL a more attractive space for its visitors, who come from all over Costa Rica. Pia, one of the volunteers on the painting group this past week, describes the sanding process as “meditative, and it is rewarding when we get to see how nice the railings on the building look after our many hours of work.” She also says that “music definitely makes the process much more enjoyable, especially Shakira.”

The outdoor group has been working in the nursery and the bamboo field. They have spent their time clearing out the fields, digging rows in the fields, and planting bamboo in the rows. The workers at FUDEBIOL are hoping to start exporting edible bamboo (as well as bamboo for construction) to other parts of the country and this was the first step towards this goal.

This week the outdoor group started work on an empty dirt field and by the end of the week had extended the field and fully prepared dozens of rows of bamboo for growth. The field is surrounded by mountains, banana trees, monkeys, and coffee plants, creating a rich natural aroma.

October, from the outdoor group, says that they “enjoy working in the fields and seeing the progress that we make.” Pia (who helped out in the outdoor group for a few days) also said that she “enjoys learning from and speaking Spanish with the FUDEBIOL staff. They have a very strategic and precise method for everything, and I’ve never had the chance to work in this kind of environment. It is an amazing learning opportunity. I also love listening to Don Gilber’s music when in the fields.”

The kitchen group has been helping the ladies at FUDEBIOL to prepare food for the group, as well as washing dishes after every meal. They enjoy working with the ladies to cut up fruits and vegetables as well as helping with whatever is needed in the kitchen. “I really enjoyed working in the kitchen. The ladies are very nice, and being able to wear the hair nets made everything ten times better, especially the beanie – hair net combo,” said Sam, a member of the kitchen group.

The cleaning group has been helping to keep clean the area that we live in. They are sanitizing the bathrooms, sweeping the classroom areas and the floors of our rooms, taking out trash and compost, cleaning the showers, and wiping down the general surfaces. Jimmy from the cleaning crew says, “It was a pretty good job, it wasn’t too difficult. The only hard part was when I had to unclog a toilet.”
