Discover AMIGOS Panama: A Day in the Life
Hello! We are Gaby and Lucy, Discover AMIGOS volunteers! We are going to tell you about our time in Panama as AMIGOS volunteers so far.
A day in the life
We usually start our day around 7:00 AM and get ready for the day. We put on sunscreen and insect repellant and brush our teeth. Next, we eat a delicious breakfast. Then, we start Spanish class or go out to do volunteer work. After 2-3 hours of all that, we have lunch. Then, we usually have wellness time which consists of playing games or going for a walk. Afterward, we have more Spanish classes or volunteering. After, we have free time until dinner at 6:00 PM. Then we have a bit of free time until the asamblea (assembly) begins at 7:00 PM. During asamblea, we talk and play a game. Next, we get ready for bed, talk a bit with our roommates, and go to sleep.
Excursions and Trips
The first fun thing we did outside of our lodging site was going to the recycling center. There, we learned how to sort the different recyclables and how important it is to not be wasteful. Later on, we went to an orchid garden, where we learned about all the different types of orchids. We also helped clean the garden a bit. Then, we went to the butterfly haven, and we learned so much! For example, did you know that some caterpillars make their cocoons out of their own skin?! After that, we went on an excursion to Cerro Gaital. We planted a few trees there and we hiked up the mountain. Something memorable that happened was that we saw a sloth! These experiences taught us about the environment and how to help conserve it.
One day we went on a hike to a waterfall. We had a nice guide show us the way. We wore our swimsuits under our clothing. While we were walking in the forest, we saw some cows. I thought one of them was a bull, but it wasn’t, and I learned that female cows can have horns too. I thought that was such a fun fact! I didn’t know that prior. Once we got to the waterfall, we had a lifeguard to make sure it was safe, and then we had some fun and swam. The hike there was a relatively short hike but it did get steep in some parts. There were lots of plants and then afterward the guide took us to this forest area where he showed us some trees that were around four hundred years old – some very old trees. The roots were humongous and we walked on little stepping stones. It was kind of like a bayou – it reminded me of The Princess and the Frog. After that, it started to rain again so our guide took us back. Afterward we met a nice woman who taught us how to make crafts out of recycled plastic bags. Then we went to a sugarcane plantation where we learned about how sugarcane is made, saw an interestingly colored bug (I think it was a grasshopper), and tried sugarcane juice and syrup.
We learned a lot so far, and we also had fun while learning! We are excited about what is next!

Un día en la vida
Usualmente empezamos el día a las 7:00 AM y nos alistamos para el día. Nos ponemos bloqueador de sol y repelente de insectos, y nos cepillamos los dientes. Después, empezamos la clase de español o nos vamos a hacer trabajo voluntario. Hacemos eso por 2-3 horas, y después almorzamos. Después, tenemos más clases de español o hacemos más trabajo voluntario. Luego, usualmente tenemos wellness time (tiempo de bienestar) en que hacemos dinámicas o salimos en una caminata. Después, tenemos un poquito de tiempo libre hasta que la asamblea empieza a las 7:00 PM. Durante la asamblea, conversamos y jugamos una dinámica. Después, nos alistamos para dormir, conversamos un poquito con nuestros compañeros de cuarto, y nos dormimos.
Excursiones y Viajes
La primera cosa divertida que hicimos afuera de nuestro sitio de hospedaje fuer ir al centro de reciclaje. Allí, aprendimos cómo separar los reciclables diferentes y qué tan importante es no ser despilfarradores. Más tarde, fuimos al orquidiario, donde aprendimos sobre tipos diferentes de orquídeas. También ayudamos a limpiar el jardín un poquito. Luego, fuimos al mariposario, ¡y aprendimos mucho! Por ejemplo, ¿sabían que las orugas hacen los capullos de su propia piel? Después de esto, fuimos a una excursión a Cerro Gaital. Sembramos algunos árboles y hicimos senderismo por una montaña. ¡Algo memorable que nos pasó fue que vimos un perezoso! Estas experiencias nos enseñaron sobre el medio ambiente y cómo ayudar a conservarlo.
Un día fuimos a hacer senderismo cerca de las cascadas. Un guía nos enseñó el sendero. Llevábamos puestos los trajes de baño bajo la ropa. Mientras que caminábamos por el bosque, vimos algunas vacas. Yo pensaba que una de ellas fue un toro, pero no fue. Aprendí que algunas vacas hembras pueden tener cuernos. ¡Me pareció un hecho interesante! No lo sabía antes. Una vez que llegamos a la cascada, el salvavida aseguró que todo estaba seguro y después nos divertimos y nadamos en el agua. La caminata era relativamente corta, pero había algunas partes empinadas. Había muchas plantas. El guía nos llevó a una parte del bosque en que nos enseñó que los árboles tenían más de 400 años – eran muy viejos. Las raíces eran enormes. Caminamos por un sendero de piedritas. Era un poquito como un pantano. Me recordó de la película La Princesa y El Sapo. Empezó a llover y el guía nos llevó a la salida. Después conocimos a una mujer amable que nos enseñó a hacer artesanía de bolsa de plástica reciclada. Luego fuimos a una plantación de caña de azúcar, donde aprendimos cómo se hace la caña de azúcar y la probamos. También vimos un bicho que era un color muy interesante – creo que era un chapulín.
¡Además de aprender mucho, nos divertimos mientras que aprendimos! Estamos emocionadas por la semana que viene.
