Dota Excursion

This Tuesday, we visited Santa María de Dota, where we took a hike around a lake and visited two different local coffee farms.

Our first stop was the lake, which was situated in a beautiful location with lots of green trees and a still lake with lots of cute little ducks. We hiked around the lake for about an hour, making sure to put on sunscreen beforehand so that we did not get burned! There was some mud, but overall the hike around the lake went smoothly and everyone was happy to get some exercise and stretch our legs and be able to experience the natural beauty of Costa Rica.

 

 

Then, we hopped back on the bus with our driver Don Diego to head to the next location. On the bus, we had fruit as a snack! Each person got some strawberries and a banana. The snacks were exquisite. When we arrived at the next location, our guide was waiting for us.

We got off the bus and took a short walk by some coffee plants, where the guide showed us the different parts of the plant and explained the coffee growing and picking process to us. He explained that a coffee plant can live for many years once it is planted, and can grow to be very tall. So tall, that the farmers need to prune the trees so that they are able to reach the coffee beans in order to pick them.

We also learned that about fifteen beans will produce one cup of coffee, and that the workers who pick the beans get paid based on how many beans they pick and, in many places, are typically paid very little money for all of the work that they do. Then, we got back on the bus and drove a short distance until we arrived at the processing area, where we examined machines that dry out the coffee and help with the packaging process. We also got to take a look at the big drying beds that they use for manually drying the coffee beans after they have been picked off of the plant. The drying beds would take many days to dry the coffee out, but the machine could dry the coffee beans very quickly.

After this tour, we had a short coffee tasting session, where we tried different varieties and our guide explained the differences between the different types of coffee. Then we had lunch and traveled to the second coffee farm. We had a shorter tour at the second coffee farm, where we learned more about the coffee process, and then we returned to FUDEBIOL for tacos. Then finally, after a long day, everybody was happy to get to sleep.

 

 

Este martes visitamos Santa María de Dota, donde hicimos una caminata alrededor de un lago y visitamos dos fincas cafeteras locales diferentes.

Nuestra primera parada fue el lago, que estaba situado en un hermoso lugar con muchos árboles verdes y un lago tranquilo con muchos patitos lindos. Caminamos alrededor del lago durante aproximadamente una hora, asegurándonos de ponernos protector solar de antemano para no quemarnos. Había algo de lodo, pero en general la caminata alrededor del lago transcurrió sin problemas y todos estaban felices de hacer algo de ejercicio, estirar las piernas y poder experimentar la belleza natural de Costa Rica.

Luego, nos subimos al autobús con nuestro conductor Diego para conducir hasta la siguiente ubicación. ¡En el autobús comimos fruta como bocadillo! A cada uno le dieron unas fresas y un plátano. Los bocadillos fueron exquisitos. Cuando llegamos al siguiente lugar, nuestro guía nos estaba esperando.

Nos bajamos del bus y dimos un paseo por algunas plantas de café, donde el guía nos mostró las diferentes partes de la planta y nos explicó el proceso de cultivo y recolección del café. Explicó que una planta de café puede vivir muchos años una vez que se planta y puede llegar a ser muy alta. Tan alto, que los agricultores necesitan podar los árboles para que puedan alcanzar los granos de café para poder cosecharlos.

También aprendimos que unos quince granos producirán una taza de café, y que a los trabajadores que recogen los granos se les paga según la cantidad de granos que recolectan y se les paga muy poco dinero por todo el trabajo que hacen. Luego, regresamos al bus y manejamos una corta distancia hasta llegar al área de procesamiento, donde examinamos las máquinas que secan el café y ayudan con el proceso de empaque. También pudimos echar un vistazo a las grandes camas de secado que utilizan para secar manualmente los granos de café después de que han sido retirados de la planta. Las camas de secado tardarían muchos días en secar el café, pero la máquina podía secar los granos de café muy rápidamente.

Después de este recorrido, tuvimos una breve sesión de degustación de café, donde probamos diferentes variedades y nuestro guía explicó las diferencias entre los diferentes tipos de café. Luego almorzamos y viajamos a la segunda finca cafetera. Hicimos un recorrido más corto en la segunda finca de café, donde aprendimos más sobre el proceso del café, y luego regresamos a FUDEBIOL por los tacos. Entonces, finalmente, después de un largo día, todos estaban felices de poder dormir.
