This week, we drove four hours from Turrialba to FUDEBIOL, which will be our home for the next six weeks. FUDEBIOL is a reserve committed to promoting the protection of the natural resources of Costa Rica, facilitating scientific investigations, bringing about environmental education, and promoting the sustainability of the watershed of the Quebradas river and the Quebradas community. We are excited to have plenty of time for group bonding! Below, read about our amazing volunteers.

Valerie (she/her/ella)
Q: “Where are you from?”
A: “I am from San Jose, Costa Rica. From the Desamparados canton.”
Q: “What were you doing before the trip here? What will you do when you go back?”
A: “I have been studying international relations at the UIA (Universidad Internacional de las Americas) doing virtual classes. I enjoy my studies because I feel like they have opened my mind to so many things that I did not know before. When I finish my studies, I hope to work somewhere where I can help make social change and empower people to better their lives and their communities. I have also been working at a jewelry store. Before that, I was interning for a non-profit organization called A.C.I.C.A.F.O.C. that worked with rural communities, indigenous groups, and afro Costa Ricans.
Q: “What has been your favorite part of the trip so far?”
A: “My favorite part so far has been getting to meet so many new people and getting the chance to practice my English with everyone.”

Ava (she/her/ella)
Q: “Where are you from?”
A: “I am from New York City, New York.”
Q: “What were you doing before the trip? What do you plan to do when you get back?”
A: “Before the trip, I was doing my first semester of college in Monterrey, California. I am studying economics and Arabic. I usually lifeguard in the summers at Asbury Park in New Jersey. When AMIGOS is over, I hope to travel with friends or do some hiking, but it is all depending on what COVID allows. Next year I will start in-person classes in Claremont, California.”
Q: “What has been your favorite part of the trip so far?”
A: “My favorite part of the trip so far has been the walks we have been going on and the beautiful view that we have of the rainforest.”

Owen (he/him/él)
Q: “Where are you from?”
A: “I am from Washington D.C.”
Q: “What were you doing before coming here and what do you plan to do when you get back?”
A: “Before this trip, I was on the first half of my gap year after high school. I was working teaching guitar lessons and doing other odd jobs. I have also been working a lot on an album I am recording with the help of some friends and family. When I go back home, I hope to finish producing the album, spend some time with friends and family and start getting ready for college in the fall next semester. I will be going to Bates College in Maine.”
Q: “What was your favorite part of the trip so far?”
A: “I really enjoyed all the bonding activities with everyone in the group.”

A: “I will be finishing college at the University of Rochester, and I’m undecided about my major.”

A: “Visiting the cacao place.”

A: “I will be going to Washington State University to study Zoology and Spanish.”

A: “Getting to know new people.”

A: “I go to Universidad Internacional San Isidro Labrador, where I’m a computer science major, and I’ll continue studying there. I’d like to work in Panama”
Q: “What was your favorite part of the trip so far?”
A: “Visiting CATIE.”

Q: “Where are you from?”
A: “I’m from New Orleans, Louisiana.”
Q: “What are your future plans?”
A: “Next year, I’ll be attending Yale University, where I plan to study Political Science, Spanish, Race/Gender Studies, and some Math/Data Science.”
Q: “What was your favorite part of the trip so far?”
A: “My favorite part of the trip has been the early morning and sunset hikes with new friends, and practicing my Spanish.”

A: “I am from the East Bay Area, near San Francisco.”
Q: “What are your future plans?”
A: “I got accepted to Willamette University in Oregon and will be studying Political Science and International Relations, but that could change. I am hoping to eventually go to Law School.”
Q: “What is your favorite part of the trip so far?”
A: “I’ve really enjoyed meeting new people and being in the moment with them, unattached to everything. My Spanish has also gotten much better over these past few weeks!”

A: “I’m going to be a visual artist.”

A: “Meeting new friends.”

A: “I don’t really have future plans… maybe I’ll be a writer or involved in politics.”

A: “The nature! It’s very beautiful here.”

A: “San Francisco.”
Q: “What are your future plans?”
A: “I am currently enrolled at Wheaton College, studying Public Health. I want to be a traveling nurse when I graduate.”
Q: “What is your favorite part of the trip so far?”
A: “It’s been fun meeting new people from all over and meeting people I wouldn’t have met otherwise. This country is beautiful and I love being here.”

Nolan (he/him/el)
Q: “Where are you from?”
A: “San Francisco, California.”
Q: “What are your future plans?”
A: “I just finished my first semester at Yale, and I am currently Undeclared. I am considering studying Econ, Environmental Science, Physics, or Computer Science.”
Q: “What are you most looking forward to on this trip?”
A: “The beach!”

We all come from different backgrounds and have different interests, but that is what makes our group dynamic so fascinating. We can’t wait to bond even further throughout the program!

Respuesta: “Yo soy de San José, Costa Rica. Del cantón de Desamparados.”
P: “¿Qué estabas haciendo antes de venir a este programa? ¿Qué vas a hacer cuando vuelvas?”
R: “Estoy estudiando relaciones internacionales en la UIA (Universidad Internacional de las Américas) de manera virtual. Me gustan muchos mis estudios porque siento que me abrieron la mente a muchas cosas. En el futuro espero trabajar en algún lugar donde pueda hacer cambios sociales y donde pueda empoderar a la gente a mejorar sus vidas y sus comunidades. También estuve trabajando en una joyería y antes trabajaba con una ONG que se llama A.C.I.C.A.F.O.C. Trabajábamos con comunidades indígenas, comunidades rurales y también con comunidades de afrodescendientes.”
P: “¿Qué es lo que más te gustó del viaje hasta ahora?”
R: “Me gustó mucho poder conocer a tanta gente nueva y también tener la oportunidad de practicar el inglés con todos.”

R: “Yo soy de la ciudad de Nueva York.”
P: “¿Qué estabas haciendo antes de venir a este programa? ¿Qué vas a hacer cuando vuelvas?”
R: “Antes del programa estaba cursando mi primer semestre en la universidad en Monterrey, California. Estoy estudiando economía y árabe. En general trabajo de salvavidas durante el verano en Asbury Park en New Jersey. Cuando se termine AMIGOS quiero viajar con mis amigos y salir a hacer hiking pero todo depende de lo que se pueda con el COVID. El año que viene empiezo las clases otra vez en Claremont, California.”
P: “¿Qué es lo que más te gusto del viaje hasta ahora?”
R: “Mis partes favoritas son las caminatas que hacemos entre todos y la vista hermosa que tenemos del bosque.”

R: “Antes de venir al programa estaba haciendo la primera mitad de mi año sabático. Estuve trabajando, dando clases de guitarra y algunos otros trabajitos. También estuve grabando un álbum con la ayuda de mi familia y mis amigos. Cuando vuelva a casa espero terminar el álbum, pasar mucho tiempo con mis amigos y mi familia y también prepararme para la universidad el semestre que viene. Voy a ir a Bates College en Maine.”
P: “¿Qué es lo que más te gusto del viaje hasta ahora?”
R: “Disfruto mucho los juegos que hacemos todos juntos.”

R: “En el año que viene, voy a asistir a Yale University, donde voy a estudiar las ciencias políticas, el español, los estudios de género y raza, las matemáticas y cifras.
P: “Que es lo que más te gusto del viaje hasta ahora?”
R: “Me encantan las caminatas de la mañana y del atardecer con nuevos amigos. También he encantado practicar mi español.”

R: “Soy del lado este de la bahía, cerca de San Francisco.”
P: “Que son sus planes para el futuro?”
R: “Fui admitida a la Universidad de Willamette en Oregón. Voy a Estudiar las Ciencias Políticas y las Relaciones Internacionales, pero esos son sujetos a cambio. Ojalá que vaya a una escuela de derecho para que pueda ser abogada.”
P: “Que es lo que más te gusto del viaje hasta ahora?”
R: “Me ha divierto mucho conocer buena gente y vivir en el momento con elles, y estoy agradecida de poder estar destacada de todo. ¡Mi nivel de español ha aumentado mucho en semanas recientes!”

R: “Todavía no sé qué hare en el futuro… quizás será escritore o estaré involucrade en la política.”

R: “Mi parte favorite del viaje ha sido la naturaleza. ¡Costa Rica es bellisima!”

R: “Estoy estudiando en la Universidad de Wheaton, y mi carrera es la Salud Publico. Cuando graduo voy a ser un médico de viaje.”

R: “Ha sido divertido conocer a nueva gente de todos lados que nunca hubiera conocido sin este programa. Este país es muy lindo y me divierto de estar aquí.”

R: “Ya he terminado mi primer semestre en Yale. Mi carrera no está declarada, pero me interesa la Economía, las Ciencias Ambientales, la Física, y las Ciencias de Computadora.”
P: “Para que estás lo más emocionado en el futuro de este programa?”
R: “Las playas!”

Todes venimos de lugares muy diferentes y tenemos gustos diferentes, pero eso es lo que crea una dinámica tan interesante. ¡Estamos muy ilusionados por pasar más tiempo juntes!
