Wow! This past week was jam packed with excitement and hard work. The Project Staff Team was busy with trainings for national volunteers, host families, local youth, and U.S. volunteers.

The National Volunteers—Dominican youth from other communities where Plan International works—are extremely excited to start their summer of intercultural exchange and service with AMIGOS. These volunteers are actively involved in their own communities and hope to put to practice their leadership skills by joining forces with the United States volunteers. Throughout the summer, there will be 6 National Volunteers on the Barahona project.

Our host family and local youth training was also a success, with nearly 100 people in attendance. It was amazing to see the eagerness of the host families to meet the volunteers and welcome them into their homes.

And, finally, the training of U.S. volunteers! This training, referred to as ‘Briefing’, was a three-day event in Barahona. Briefing provides volunteers with the opportunity to get to know the project, Dominican culture, the AMIGOS and Plan International teams, and the communities where they will be living for three weeks.

These trainings ensure that everyone involved with the program is prepared for the arrival of the volunteers and is ready for what is sure to be an exciting AMIGOS summer!

¡La semana pasada fue una semana intensiva en lo que fue las capacitaciones de los jóvenes locales y las familias anfitrionas, los voluntarios nacionales, y la de los voluntarios de los Estados Unidos!

Los voluntarios nacionales—jóvenes de otras comunidades de la República Dominicana donde trabaja nuestra agencia asociada Plan International—están muy emocionados para tener ese intercambio de experiencia y cultural. Estos voluntarios están involucrados activamente en sus propias comunidades y por eso quieren ir a otras comunidades a trabajar con los voluntarios de los Estados Unidos para poner en práctica todas sus habilidades y así hacer un buen equipo con ellos. A lo largo del verano participarán 6 voluntarios nacionales en nuestro programa.

A nuestra capacitación de familias anfitrionas y jóvenes locales había cerca de 100 personas en asistencia. Es muy emocionante ver la disponibilidad de las familias para estar esperando los participantes, esa disponibilidad de abrir sus puertas para recibir estos adolescentes y convertirlo en parte de su familia.

Y, finalmente, la capacitación de los voluntarios de los Estados Unidos. Esta capacitación que se llama ‘Briefing’ duró tres días en Barahona. Durante Briefing, los voluntarios tenían tiempo para conocer mejor a nuestro proyecto, la cultura de la República Dominicana, el personal de AMIGOS y de Plan International y las comunidades dónde están por las tres semanas.

Todas estas capacitaciones aseguran que cada persona involucrada en el trabajo de AMIGOS está preparada para recibir a los voluntarios y empezar con esta gran y grata experiencia.
