La Costa: Isla de la Plata

The last week of the project began and with it, the enthusiasm of all the volunteers to know new places and live new experiences, Puerto Lopez was the place where we stayed; specifically at the Hosteria Mandala. We started the day very early to be on time for one of the best experiences we were going to have during our stay on the coast, one of the most fascinating regions of Ecuador. The day basically consisted of a tour of more than 10 hours to Isla de la Plata, in addition to other very interesting activities that left us with lessons along with amazing experiences.
With the excitement of obtaining new experiences we venture to a wonderful place; the Isla de la Plata. Our tour started from where we were staying with a walk across the boardwalk to the Puerto Lopez dock. When we arrived we boarded a yacht with the expectation of knowing that fantastic place. The trajectory over the water was 1 hour in the open sea, emphasizing how incredible the experience of being surrounded by the Pacific Ocean was, counting on the fact that we had some excellent guides who supported us throughout our tour. From the moment we arrived at Isla de la Plata, the emotion in all of us did not wait, since the water that surrounded the Island was crystal clear, in addition, you could see everything through it.
Our first activity was the walk around the island, which was surrounded by a type of vegetation characterized by the dry tropics, despite the fact that the flora of the place is not complemented with abundant leaves and has the appearance of being lifeless. It is the opposite, the trees are in a state of wintering for a long time. Among other of the many wonders of the island, we find a variety of species of fauna of which I can emphasize the blue-footed boobies, frigates, and hummingbirds. Without a doubt, Isla de la Plata is one of the wonders of Ecuador.
After getting to know this part of the Machalilla National Park and seeing numerous types of birds and plants that live on this island, we set sail again in order to go to a part where there are coral reefs and marine animals such as turtles and manta rays. After learning all the safety measures from the guides who accompanied us, we ventured out to snorkel, a sport that basically consists of observing marine species from the surface. Among the animals that we were able to observe were: sea turtles, manta rays, angelfish, barracuda, and what most astonished us all was hearing the song of the humpback whales that, as our guides explained, can be heard from miles away.
La ultima semana del proyecto empezaba y con ella, el entusiasmo de todos los voluntarios de conocer nuevos lugares y vivir nuevas experiencias, Puerto Lopez fue el lugar en donde nos hospedamos; especificamente en la Hosteria Mandala. Empezamos el dia desde muy temprano para estar a tiempo a una de las mejores experiencias que ibamos a tener durante nuestra estancia en la Costa; una de las regiones mas fascinantes de Ecuador. El dia consistia basicamente en un tour de mas de 10 horas hacia la Isla de la Plata, ademas de otras actividades muy interesantes y que nos dejaron lecciones junto asombrosas experiencias.
Con la emoción de obtener nuevas experiencias nos aventuramos a un maravilloso lugar; la Isla de la Plata. Nuestro recorrido empezó desde el sitio donde nos estabamos hospedando con una caminata a traves del malecón hasta el muelle de Puerto Lopez. Cuando llegamos nos embarcamos en un yate con la expectativa de conocer aquel fantástico lugar. La trayectoria sobre el agua fue de 1 hora a mar abierto, haciendo énfasis en lo increíble que fue la experiencia de estar rodeados por el oceano Pacífico, contando con que tuvimos a unos excelentes guías que nos apoyaron en todo nuestro tour. Desde el momento en el arrivamos en la Isla de la Plata, la emoción en todos nosotros no se hizo esperar, ya que, el agua que rodeaba la Isla era cristalina, ademas que se podía observar todo a través de ella.
Por consiguiente, nuestra primera actividad fue la caminata por la Isla, la cual estaba rodeada de un tipo de vegetación caracterizado por su trópico seco, a pesar de que la flora del lugar no este complementada con abundantes hojas y tenga la aparencia de estar sin vida, es todo lo contario, los arboles se encuentran en estado de invernación por mucho tiempo. Entre otras de las muchas maravillas de la Isla, nos encontramos con una variedad de especies de fauna de las cuales puedo recalcar a los piqueros de patas azules, fragatas y los colibríes. Sin duda alguna la Isla de la Plata, es una de la maravillas del Ecuador.
Tras haber conocido acerca de esta parte del Parque Nacional Machalilla y de haber visto numerosos tipos de aves y plantas que viven en esta Isla, volvimos a zarpar con el fin de ir a una parte donde existen arrecifes de coral y animales marinos como tortugas y mantarayas. Luego de aprender todas las medidas de seguridad por parte de los guías que nos acompañaron nos aventuramos a realizar snorkeling, un deporte que consiste basicamente en la observacion de especies marinas desde la superficie. De entre los animales que pudimos observar estuvieron: tortugas marinas, mantarayas, el pez angel, barracuda y lo que mas nos asombró a todos fue escuchar el canto de la ballenas jorobadas que como nos explicaron nuestros guías, se puede escuchar a kilometros de distancia.
