¡Hola from La Costa!

As our trip reaches a close, we have been reflecting on our experiences, what we learned, what we will take home with us, and how to replicate these experiences in local communities. In an experience where we are constantly moving it is crucial to take time to consider the impact our work has had. When I think back on the most impactful day in this trip, something jumps out at me. A few days into our stay at Puerto Lopez we were told (the night before, as on par with our instructor’s gatekeeping techniques) that we had an especially challenging day ahead of us, that we were to work at a dump in the morning. There is a small group of people, 35 to be exact, who make up the Asociacion de Recicladores.

These people work 7-hour shifts 5 to 7 days a week digging through trash to find materials that can be sorted and sold to a recycling dump. Their salary? Ten to fifteen dollars a week. This association was created to solve many problems. It serves as a source of income, as recycling is a completely untapped resource, prevents the trash from spilling into their backyards, and helps the environment by reducing waste. Their passion fuels the organization and to be included in an organization started from the group up was such a privilege.

In my view, any assistance we could give these workers was not only in our job description as AMIGOS volunteers, but a responsibility.

So, in the morning we ate, packed up, and headed to the dump where we spent the next two hours standing on mountains of garbage, batting bags with sticks, and sorting through piles of trash to try and find hard plastics, metals, specific types of glass bottles and cardboard. It was hard but it felt good to be able to use our many hands for good and to learn along the way. The workers told us about things they found in the dump, their struggle with the government to not have to sort through medical waste, and their lives. By looking across the hole filled with garbage, I felt prouder of my group than at any point this trip for showing up for our partner agencies and being open-minded to helping when requested.

When we got back, we showered, ate lunch, and then spent the rest of the day at the beach frolicking in the ocean and laying on the sand. We went to bed fulfilled and proud, and grateful, again, for choosing AMIGOS. This feeling, among many is one of the main reasons I am sad to be leaving but I know I will carry everything I did here back to the States.
