Hi, I’m Hector! I am so excited to come back to Ecuador, and especially to The Sierra. I am native to Nicaragua and grew up in its capital, Managua. Just over ten years ago I took a turn from working in media and market research to working in education and international development. I found this work fulfilling and eye-opening. In 2013, I earned a full scholarship and moved to Australia for a master’s in development studies with an ethnographic approach.

I lived in Ecuador for three years (2014–2017), establishing a youth and leadership program in collaboration with EIL-Ecuador. I was based in the heart of the Ecuadorian Sierra – Riobamba, and Quito was my second home. The wealth of culture in Ecuador and The Sierra is one of the reasons for my return.

 

¡Hola! Mi nombre es Hector y me emociona volver al Ecuador, y en particular a La Sierra. Soy oriundo de Nicaragua y crecí en la capital. Hace unos diez años di un giro de carrera, pasé de trabajar en investigación de mercado y televisión, a este maravilloso mundo del desarrollo y cooperación internacional. Me gusta porque es una manera de aportar, de forma concreta, a temas de importancia para nuestro futuro. En 2013 me gané una beca para estudiar en Australia, donde cursé una maestría en estudios del desarrollo con enfoque antropológico.

Viví en Ecuador por tres años (2014-2017), principalmente en Riobamba, y consideré a Quito mi segundo hogar. Durante esos años establecí un programa de liderazgo juvenil junto con EIL-Ecuador. La riqueza cultural del país es una de mis principales motivaciones para regresar.

 

Hi all! I’m Sophia and I’m super excited to meet you all in just a couple of weeks! I’m in the middle of studying International Relations at Stanford University in California but took the spring term off of school to work full time at an organization that connects the UN and World Bank with regional experts to help them design conflict prevention and peace-building programs. I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area but for the last couple of years before college, I lived in the Middle East (in Jordan and the UAE) and also in Uruguay through the AMIGOS Gap Semester program.

I first got involved in AMIGOS when I signed my family up to be a host family for Youth Ambassadors from Uruguay and Paraguay and my family loved the experience so we ended up hosting 4 Youth Ambassadors while I was in high school. During my gap year, I worked as a summer camp counselor/tennis coach at a camp in West Virginia, spent 4 months in Uruguay through AMIGOS, and also worked as a reporter covering national affairs for The National newspaper in Abu Dhabi, UAE. Last summer, I worked as a Project Mentor for AMIGOS’ first virtual Community Impact Project. Right now, I’m doing research with a professor on how COVID-19 has impacted food security around the world and so I’m super excited to learn more about food security in Ecuador this summer. I love trying new foods, practicing my Spanish and Arabic, playing all kinds of sports (especially tennis), and hope to become a journalist/foreign correspondent based in Latin America or the Middle East one day.

 

Hola todos! Soy Sophia y estoy muy emocionada por conocerles muy pronto. Estudio relaciones internacionales en la Universidad Stanford pero recién estaba trabajando en una organización que ayuda a la ONU y el Banco Mundial para planificar programas que se trata de prevención de conflictos. Crecí cerca de San Francisco pero viví en el Medio Oriente (en Jordania y EAU) por algunos años antes de universidad. Originalmente, me involucré con Amigos como familia anfitriona por el programa de Jóvenes Embajadores y 4 chicas de Uruguay y Paraguay vinieron a vivir con mi familia. Durante mi año sabático, trabajé como consejera de campamento y instructora de tenis en un campamento en West Virginia, viví en Montevideo por 4 meses a través del programa de Amigos y trabajé como periodista en un periódico que se llama The National en Abu Dhabi, EAU. El verano pasado, era un Project Mentor en el Proyecto de Impacto Comunitario con amigos porque iba a trabajar en Costa Rica pero el programa era cancelado por COVID. Ahora, hago investigaciones con una profesora sobre soberanía alimentaria y por eso estoy muy emocionada de aprender más sobre soberanía alimentaria en Ecuador este verano. Me encanta probar comidas nuevas, practicar mi español y arabe y en el futuro espero ser periodista.

 

 

I’m Carolina Díaz and I’m so happy and excited to be part of this amazing project. I am a linguist, and in the last three years, I participated in different leadership courses and programs, where I was able to learn about project management and the social reality of my country. I am passionate about volunteering and intercultural exchange. I come from a small town in the center of Ecuador but I moved to Quito a couple of years ago to study and pursue my dreams. One year ago I coordinated the exchange program of San Gabriel High School, where I supported students as they sought to get to know new cultures and places.

 

Mi nombre es Carolina Díaz y estoy muy feliz de poder formar parte del equipo y estoy segura que podremos aprender mucho de todos. Soy lingüista de profesión y en los últimos tres años he tenido la oportunidad de trabajar y formarme en temas de liderazgo y desarrollo de proyectos sociales. También me apasiona el voluntariado, y el intercambio intercultural. Soy de una pequeña ciudad en el centro de Ecuador, pero me mudé a Quito para estudiar y perseguir mis sueños. He colaborado como voluntaria y facilitadora en distintos proyectos sociales en mi universidad en donde pude conocer sobre las problemáticas sociales de mi entorno y también buscar soluciones alternativas trabajando interdisciplinariamente. Hace un año fui la Coordinadora de programas de intercambio en el Colegio San Gabriel en Quito en donde aprendí a trabajar con adolescentes y apoyarlos en su sueño de conocer otros horizontes y culturas. Sin más que añadir estoy muy emocionada por conocerlos.

 

I’m Cait Quirk and I am so excited to work with you all this summer! I just finished up my junior year at the University of Washington, where I study International Relations, Latin American Studies, and Spanish. Specifically, I am interested in indigenous studies and women’s rights in Latin America. My experience with these topics comes from working in San José, Costa Rica and studying in Quito, Ecuador. In Costa Rica, I worked for a peacebuilding NGO and did research on arms and ammunition trafficking in Central America. In Quito, I studied Spanish and taught English to local high schoolers at Colegio Intiyán. After being sent home early last year from my university program in Quito due to COVID, I am so happy to be able to return to Ecuador! This summer I hope to learn more about food security and sustainable farming. I also hope to learn from all of you and your experiences, as well as from the local communities we will be engaging with.

¡Hola, soy Cait Quirk y estoy emocionada por trabajar con ustedes este verano!  Me encuentro cursando el tercer año de la carrera en la Universidad de Washington, donde yo estudio relaciones internacionales, español y América Latina y el Caribe. Específicamente, tengo interés en los estudios indígenas y los derechos humanos de las mujeres. Mi experiencia con estos temas proviene del tiempo que he pasado en San José, Costa Rica y Quito, Ecuador. En Costa Rica, trabajé para una ONG e investigué el tráfico de armas y municiones en Centroamérica. En Quito, estudié español y enseñé inglés a los alumnos del Colegio Intiyán. ¡Después de regresar temprano a EEUU debido al COVID, estoy tan alegre de poder ir a Ecuador otra vez! Este verano, quiero aprender más sobre la seguridad alimentaria y la agricultura sostenible en las comunidades locales. Además, quiero aprender de ustedes y sus experiencias.
