Los Santos: Coffee Paradise
Between the mountains and fog is the area of Los Santos, a cozy place where you can breathe in the aroma of coffee and enjoy the good vibes of the Ticos. Here, one wakes up with the singing of the yigüirro bird and the heart is content with a good casado dish. At all hours you hear people say pura vida and there is no lack of reason to feel wonderful.
I am so excited to welcome you and know you are on board. This experience has incredible people and everything will be akchete (typical word in Costa Rica when things are great). Speaking of interesting things, I’m going to introduce the team. We are of different nationalities who share the spirit of AMIGOS and this summer we are going to offer you an unforgettable experience with a lot of learning.
My name is Nohelia Gutierrez Huañec, Coordinator of the Costa Rica: Los Santos 2022 Project. I come from the imperial city of the Incas of Cusco-Peru and I can teach you some words in Quechua. I am an alumnus of the Latin American Leadership Academy (LALA) and have a Bachelor’s degree in Economics. I was the Coordinator of the Study Center of the Cusco Chamber of Commerce and I participated in the First Meeting 2022 of the presentation of research projects for the future development of Korea and Peru. I love social projects, especially those related to the promotion of quality education. Also, I was an ambassador in my country for the World Literacy Foundation program and thanks to the tools it provided, I founded BooktoWorld, a non-profit organization that encourages reading and languages in rural areas. I like connecting with nature, dancing, discovering new cultures, and coffee ice cream.
Shyam Kamath, Project Director in Los Santos. He is from New York, and his parents are from a village near the city of Mangalore, on the Southwest coast of India. So, he essentially grew up with two cultures. He graduated from New York University with a BA in Economics and started working at a global bank for several years. In 2019, he wanted to change his path and industry and decided to embark on a solo travel journey throughout South America. He has been living a “nomad” life and works remotely as an English teacher for an international language school in Querétaro, Mexico as well as a language NGO in Medellín, Colombia. He likes volunteering, dancing (Bhangra, Latin, Hip Hop), fitness (gym, sports, surfing), and anything related to food.
Bella Fassett, our Health & Wellness Coordinator, is from Oregon and is currently a student of International Relations at the Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University in Washington DC. In August, she will be studying in Madrid, Spain. She is heavily involved in student government and projects supporting low-income and disabled LGBTQ students. She was an admissions counselor helping students apply to the “Alternative Breaks” program in Georgetown, and was an intern at the Arupo Foundation which serves disabled children in Ibarra, Ecuador. She lived 6 months in this city with the gap year program called Global Citizen Year. In her spare time, she enjoys taking pictures, baking, exploring DC, watching TikToks, listening to music, and spending time watching TV.
Cristhofer Ureña Zuñiga, another Coordinator of the project, lives in Pérez Zeledón in the south of Costa Rica. He has been involved with AMIGOS since 2007 when he and his family were hosts, and he participates in different youth groups in his community. He is a Systems Engineer and is currently studying for his bachelor’s degree. He briefly worked at the Ministry of Education. in addition to a company that develops web pages and online video games. He has knowledge of the cultivation and production of coffee since his family is dedicated to this activity. He likes to travel, practice boxing and eat spicy food.

Los Santos: El paraíso del café
Entre montañas y neblina se encuentra la zona de Los Santos, un lugar acogedor donde se respira café y se disfruta de la buena vibra de los Ticos. Aquí se despierta con el cantar del yigüirro y el corazón se pone contento con un buen plato de casado. A todas horas se escucha decir “PURA VIDA” y razón no falta para sentirse de maravilla.
Estoy muy emocionada de darles la bienvenida y saber que están a bordo. Este viaje cuenta con personas increíbles y todo estará akchete (palabra típica en Costa Rica cuando las cosas son geniales). Hablando de cosas interesantes, voy a presentar al equipo. Nosotros somos de diferentes nacionalidades que compartimos el espíritu de AMIGOS y este verano vamos a brindarte una inolvidable experiencia con mucho aprendizaje.

Amo los proyectos sociales; en especial los relacionados a la promoción de la educación de calidad. Fuí embajadora en mi país del programa World Literacy Foundation y gracias a las herramientas brindadas fundé BooktoWorld una organización sin fines de lucro que incentiva la lectura e idiomas en zonas rurales. Me gusta conectar con la naturaleza, bailar, conocer nuevas culturas y el helado de café.

Actualmente está trabajando virtualmente como profesor de Inglés para una Escuela Internacional de Idiomas en Querétaro, México y trabaja con una ONG de idiomas en Medellín, Colombia. Le gusta los voluntariados, el baile (Bhangra, Latin, Hip Hop), el fitness (gimnasio, deportes, surf) y todo lo relacionado con la comida.
Bella es de Oregon y actualmente es estudiante de Relaciones Internacionales en Walsh School of Foreign Service en la Universidad de Georgetown en Washington DC y en agosto estudiará en Madrid. Ella está muy involucrada en el gobierno estudiantil y en proyectos de soporte a estudiantes LGBTQ de bajos ingresos y discapacitados. Fue consejera de admisiones para ayudar a estudiantes a aplicar al programa “Alternative Breaks” en Georgetown, y fue pasante en la Fundación Arupo la cuál sirve a niños discapacitados en Ibarra, Ecuador. Vivió 6 meses en esta ciudad con el programa de año sabático llamado Global Citizen Year. En su tiempo libre le gusta hacer fotografías, hornear, explorar DC, mirar Tiktoks, escuchar música y pasar tiempo viendo la televisión. Bella será la Coordinadora de Salud y Bienestar.
Cristhofer Ureña Zuñiga, Coordinador del proyecto y vive en Pérez Zeledón al sur de Costa Rica. Conoce AMIGOS desde 2007 cuando fue familia anfitriona y participa en diferentes grupos juveniles en su comunidad. Él es Ingeniero en Sistemas y actualmente está estudiando una licenciatura. Trabajó brevemente en el Ministerio de Educación; además, de una empresa desarrolladora de páginas web y videojuegos en línea. Tiene conocimiento en el cultivo y producción de café ya que su familia se dedica a esta actividad. Le gusta viajar, practicar boxeo y la comida picante.
