Los Santos: Coffee Week
Hola! Our names are Jonathan, Veronica, and Kyndall. We are excited to give you another blog post from Los Santos, Costa Rica! This past week has been full of community service, exploration, and cultural learning.
We have continued to engage in service and learning with the leaders of our assigned volunteer sites. Through our time we have completed tasks such as sorting coffee, digging pots, fertilizing, and other necessary jobs at coffee producers do each day. It is clear that lots of love, care, and attention goes into each cup of coffee. After returning home, we will look beyond the Starbucks cup and truly understand what goes into the delicious seed concoction.
During this week, we have gone on many enjoyable and educational excursions. On Wednesday, we split into two groups and went on separate adventures. The first went to a strawberry farm where volunteers observed what goes into strawberry cultivation and participated in traditional Costa Rica dances (Veronica thought that the goldenberries grown there were cool). The others ventured to Los Robles where they learned about both the historical and modern landscape of Cosa Rica. Later that week on Saturday, we all traveled to Paraiso Quetzal where we explored the biodiversity of Costa Rica. We hiked and observed the flora and fauna of the region. The next day, we all went to Laguna Don Manuel. There, we spent the day walking around the lake, skipping stones, and having a midday picnic for lunch.
There were also a number of educational workshops presented to us, that dived into key pillars of the AMIGOS curriculum and culture. For instance, we discussed cultural icebergs and how you do not know what people think, feel, or believe until you ask. Our next workshop was shared by a representative from Bean Voyage (our partner agency for this journey) and explored the role that we each can play in dismantling gender stereotypes and securing gender equality. At the Laguna Don Manuel, a staff-led workshop expanded our understanding of the intricacies of race.
We engaged with authentic Costa Rican culture through culinary lessons and dance. Doña Cecilia (the owner of our first lodging site) taught us how to make tortillas and arranged for a local band to play music as she taught us traditional dances. Fun fact: Matthew McConaughey once stayed at Cabaña Cecilia and there is a building named after him!
Spanish classes continued for the three levels (basic, intermediate, and advanced) with an emphasis on regional traditions and coffee production. The instructor, Natalia, says she is focused on the traditions and culture of Costa Rica. She enjoys teaching us vocabulary and grammar and is very happy to have the opportunity to share her culture and language with us.
Lastly, we traveled to the Cedrela Eco-Lodge. This is where we will be living for the remainder of our stay. We look forward to updating you all soon.

Los Santos: Semana de Café
¡Hola! Nuestras nombres son Jonathan, Veronica y Kyndall, y ¡Estamos emocionados de escribir otro capítulo de Los Santos de Costa Rica!. Estas semanas han estado repletas de servicio a la comunidad, exploraciones y aprendizaje cultural.
Nosotros estamos comprometidos con nuestro voluntariado y aprendemos de los líderes de la comunidad. A lo largo de nuestro tiempo hemos realizado tareas como clasificar café, cavar macetas, fertilizar y otros trabajos que los caficultores realizan día a día. Después de regresar a casa, miraremos más allá de la taza de Starbucks y comprenderemos realmente lo que implica la deliciosa mezcla de semillas porque aprendimos que el café esta hecho de mucho amor, cuidado y atención.
Durante esta semana hemos realizado muchas excursiones divertidas y educativas. El miércoles 22 de junio nos dividimos en dos grupos y emprendimos aventuras separadas: El primero fue a una granja de fresas donde los voluntarios observaron lo que implica el cultivo de fresas y participaron en bailes tradicionales de Costa Rica (Verónica cree que las uchuvas que se cultivaban allí son geniales), los otros se aventuraron a Los Robles donde aprendieron sobre el paisaje histórico y moderno de Cosa Rica. El sábado todos viajamos a Paraiso Quetzal donde exploramos la biodiversidad de Costa Rica, caminamos y observamos la flora y fauna de la región. Al día siguiente, nos fuimos a la Laguna Don Manuel y allí pasamos el día caminando alrededor del lago, tirando piedras y haciendo un picnic al mediodía para almorzar.
También tuvimos talleres educativos en donde se profundizo los pilares del currículo y la cultura de AMIGOS. Por ejemplo, discutimos los icebergs culturales y cómo uno no sabe lo que la gente piensa, siente o cree hasta que pregunta a la otra persona. El siguiente taller fue hecho por un representante de Bean Voyage (nuestra agencia asociada para este viaje) y nos mostró el papel de cada uno de nosotros para desmantelar los estereotipos de género y asegurar la igualdad de género. En Laguna Don Manuel, el taller dirigido por el personal amplió nuestra comprensión de las complejidades de la carrera.
Estamos involucrados con la auténtica cultura costarricense a través de lecciones culinarias y baile, Doña Cecilia (La propietaria de nuestro primer sitio de alojamiento) nos enseñó a hacer tortillas y trajó una banda local con música tradicional mientras nos enseñaba sus bailes. Dato curioso: Matthew McConaughey una vez se hospedó en Cabaña Cecilia y hay un edificio que lleva su nombre.
Las clases de español continuaron para los tres niveles (Básico, Intermedio y Avanzado) con énfasis en las tradiciones regionales y la producción de café. La instructora, Natalia, dice que está enfocada en las tradiciones y la cultura de Costa Rica. Ella disfruta enseñándonos vocabulario, gramática y está muy contenta de tener la oportunidad de compartir su cultura e idioma con nosotros.
Por último, viajamos al Cedrela Eco-Lodge. Aquí es donde viviremos por el resto de nuestra estadía. Esperamos poder actualizarlos a todos pronto.
