Los Santos – Summer 2024
Another remarkable chapter of the Los Santos Project in 2024 has come to a close, and we are filled with immense pride and gratitude for our volunteers, host families, partner agencies, and everyone who made this project possible! We had 43 incredible volunteers who participated in one of three sessions (A, B, or C), with project durations of either 4 weeks or 9 weeks. Throughout this inspiring initiative, we had the privilege of engaging with more than 15 diverse communities and collaborating with over 30 host families. Each community welcomed our volunteers with open arms, offering a unique glimpse into their daily lives and rich cultural traditions. This profound level of engagement allowed our volunteers to experience daily life in these communities in a way that went beyond traditional volunteering.
“Because of this experience, I want to make sure I take the time to acknowledge the simple and seemingly unimportant or unexciting parts of my day and use those opportunities to practice being present and grateful.”
With over 18 diverse service projects completed across the region, the Los Santos Project was a journey of growth and impact. From environmental conservation efforts to community development, the dedication and enthusiasm of our volunteers were evident in every task they undertook. These projects were designed not only to address immediate needs but also to foster long-term growth and sustainability within the communities. Some 9-week volunteers completed multiple service projects in their respective communities, including constructing a new library, building furniture for the local school, and installing benches for the communal field.
“The biggest thing I gained from AMIGOS was all the amazing relationships I made with my host family and community. I was pushed outside my comfort zone and had to lean on others, which led me to form incredibly close relationships in my community.”
Our volunteers immersed themselves in new environments and adapted to different ways of life. Living with host families allowed them to experience true cultural immersion. They didn’t just visit the Los Santos Zone; they lived, learned, and grew alongside their hosts, gaining a deep appreciation for the local customs, traditions, and ways of life. This hands-on experience enriched their understanding of the world and enhanced their ability to contribute meaningfully to the communities they served.
“I had the most amazing host parents and siblings and met so many wonderful people who made me feel welcome and cared for.”
Our volunteers created lasting, meaningful connections and memories with their host families and communities, sharing moments of joy and facing challenges together. These relationships and experiences have enriched the lives of both volunteers and host families, creating a legacy of respect and shared growth.
“I am so happy to have met such wonderful people who were so excited to share about themselves and their culture. I truly felt like part of a family, and it meant so much to me.”
Several volunteers had the opportunity to take on leadership roles in local schools through various extracurricular activities. Some led after-school programs, organizing engaging and educational activities that sparked the children’s curiosity and creativity. Others assisted teachers directly in the classroom, supporting lesson plans and facilitating classroom activities. Through these roles, the volunteers not only contributed to the students’ learning experiences but also built meaningful relationships with local youth and educators. Overall, our volunteers enjoyed connecting with the community and making a positive impact on the lives of the children and teachers they worked with.
