Montanas y Mar: Turtle Conservation
After a week of very up and down weather, we have changed course and are now in Matapalo, Puntarenas. As soon as we arrived on Monday afternoon, we began working with an organization called ASVPA (Asociación de Voluntarios para la Protección del Ambiente) to aid in the conservation of turtles.
After our expectations were exceeded in Monteverde, our arrival in Matapalo has taken some adjustment. We are living in two shared dorm rooms, one for the girls and one for the boys. Even though we each have less space, it has been a great time bonding with one another. Another big difference for many of us is that the hostel we are staying at only provides vegetarian meals. As a whole, we have taken this as an opportunity to explore new possibilities and try something different.
Every day we volunteer for ASVPA and help them with turtle conservation practices. We have 2 shifts; patrolling the beach for turtles, turtle eggs, and poachers and watching the hatchery where we keep a close eye on the turtle eggs and prevent crabs from eating them. In addition, we have also helped plant trees, clean trails and the beach, and help the process of reforestation.
Our pod has had a ton of fun on our beach days. We have loved playing in the waves, getting covered in sand, and kicking the soccer ball around. The aftermath has been even funnier with many of us repping interesting sunburn patterns and bathing in aloe vera.
Seeing as this is the last blog post from us, we’d like to add that all the volunteers have made extremely strong bonds with one another and are very sad to see our trip come to an end.

Después de enfrentar el clima cambiante, hemos cambiado nuestra ruta y estamos en Matapalo, Puntarenas. Cuando llegamos el lunes por la tarde, empezamos nuestro trabajo con la organización ASVPA (Asociación de Voluntarios para la Protección del Ambiente) para ayudar en la conservación de tortugas.
Después de que tuvimos una experiencia tan buena en Monteverde, nuestra llegada a Matapalo fue un poco sorprendente. Todos estamos quedando en dos cuartos; uno para los chicos y otro para las chicas. A pesar de que tenemos menos espacio, nos hemos podido convertir en mejores amigos. Otro gran diferencia es que nuestro hostel solo nos sirve comida vegetariana pero todos hemos usado esto como explorer posibilidades nuevas y probar cosas nuevas.
Todos los días, voluntaremos para ASVPA y ayudamos con prácticas de conservación de tortugas. Nosotros tomamos turnos patrullando la playa para tortugas, huevos, y hueveros y en el Vivero monitoreamos los huevos de Tortuga para proteger los de los cangrejos. En addition, nosotros ayudamos a plantar árboles, limpiar caminos y la playa, y ayudar en el proceso de reforestación.
Nuestro pod se ha divertido mucho en los días en la playa. Nos encantó jugar en las olas, ser cubiertos en arena, y jugar con el fútbol. Los días después son muy chistosos porque muchos tienen patrones de bronceado muy interesantes y se están bañando en aloe vera.
Viendo que este será nuestro último blog, nos gustaría añadir que todos los participantes han formado conexiones muy fuertes entre nosotros y estamos muy tristes de terminar nuestro viaje.
