Nueva Segovia: An Unforgettable Trip

After a long trip full of interesting talks and lots of laughter, we arrived at Lake Cocibolca, Lake Nicaragua, and from there we had to take a boat to reach the island. Finally, after 6 hours on the road and 40 minutes by boat we arrived at Zapatera Island. We were assigned to our host families. We had time to share and have quality time with our new moms and brothers (the family we were going to share for 5 days), we had dinner together and it was time to sleep so we could all rest from the long trip we had. For the first group the island received, they welcomed us as if they were already experts in the field. What we liked most about this community is that all the people live quite close, we were practically all neighbors. The farthest house was 2 minute’s walk.

After three days of work, under the observation and guidance of the community members, we were able to work successfully in gardens in houses and school gardens, gardens made by ourselves in houses of the same people of the community. In the same way, with the collaboration of the members of the community, we managed to plant 250 trees with the aim of restoring the fauna inside the island. We also had the opportunity to spend a day working at the island school and playing football with their students. A few hours later we participated in the English class and the teacher gave us the opportunity to be his assistants.

The island was a spectacular experience, having the opportunity to see its sunsets and enjoy its nature is one in a million and at the same time meeting people who are members of a community on the way to self-sustainability is something impressive.

Yesterday we returned to Managua and settled in the hotel. We were very excited because after 2 weeks we had access to things that were limited in the communities like a shower with running water. Then we had a very interesting activity which was to prepare ourselves for what followed after AMIGOS, how to tell our story and the beautiful experience that we live in these 3 weeks and that for all of us to be honest was the best experience that we could have all had, we learned many things that can serve us in the future and apart from the coexistence of all in such a short time was great.

We all had a smile on our faces when we reached the goal when our families understood each other very well; hoping to meet again with the families of the communities we went to.

The little time we used to relax as a group (sunsets, games on the field ) those little moments we enjoyed because they were of many mixed feelings as a group and it was so much fun when we talked about what was the day, how we had fun.

We finished our trip returning to Managua, with a full heart and a mind full of memories, we hope that the people of the community will also cherish us in their memory.
