Nueva Segovia – July 13–15
July 13th
Today, many of us got some much-needed extra sleep at the courtesy of Juan Carlos. Though this did mean a bit of a scramble to get to breakfast, we can’t complain, as we feel well-rested, and had a delicious breakfast of pancakes and fresh fruit. We had our first Spanish lessons today, as well as some free time and curriculum. During the curriculum, we learned about social change and how to initiate it, as well as sharing some of our own experiences surrounding it. During our free time, some of us played a vigorous game of soccer tennis on the beach, while others enjoyed playing cards or reading. An intense game of “Hearts” interrupted the calm. After our morning of learning, the cooks delighted us with a lunch of yuca, pork, and cabbage salad with a refreshing glass of passion fruit juice. After lunch, we continued to learn and enjoy some free time before dinner, ending the day with “asamblea.”
July 14th
This morning, we woke up bright and early to a delicious breakfast of Gallo Pinto and plantain empanadas, as well as fresh mango and juice. We all met to get on the bus, driving to La Salle Universidad del Tecnología en Leon. There, we were welcomed and told a brief background and history of the university. We split into two groups, with one visiting a classroom to learn about the different types of renewable energy, as well as to see and participate in demonstrations. The other group watched a demonstration on how to make more sustainable fuel using animal manure, even watching before our own eyes as a flame was created from the process. After a lunch of pizza, we switched groups, and then returned home. We then had Spanish lessons and finished off the day with a game of “Hearts,” dinner, and asamblea.
July 15th
Today, we got to sleep in later than yesterday, which was very appreciated by everyone. Our breakfast was eggs and ham with a side of fruit. We had a small break before either starting the Spanish class of the day, or the curriculum. The curriculum was very engaging, with the first part being an interactive lesson about how different aspects of our identity play a role in our lives and how we interact with other people. The second part was a lesson and discussion about privilege, specifically white privilege and how privilege shows up differently in our lives. We also strengthen the group’s bonds and sense of community with a session of group dynamics, after which we got some free time. Everyone enjoys soccer tennis, cards, and games of mafia in our free moments.

Hoy, muchos de nosotros conseguimos dormir un poco más gracias a la cortesía de Juan Carlos. Aunque esto significó un poco de dificultad para ir a desayunar, no podíamos quejarnos, ya que nos sentíamos bien descansado y tuvimos un delicioso desayuno de panqueques y frutas extras. hoy tuvimos nuestra primera lección de español también tiempo libre y plan de estudio, en el plan de estudio aprendimos sobre el cambio social y como iniciarlo, además de compartir algunas de nuestras propias experiencias en torno a él. Durante nuestro tiempo libre, algunos de nosotros jugamos un vigoroso partido de fútbol-tenis en la playa, mientras que otros disfrutaban jugando a las cartas o leyendo. Un intenso juego de “Corazones” interrumpió la calma. Luego de nuestra mañana de aprendizaje, las cocineras nos deleitaron con un almuerzo de chancho con yuca y con un refrescante vaso de jugo de maracuyá. Después del almuerzo, continuamos aprendiendo y disfrutando un poco de tiempo libre antes de la cena, terminando el día con una “asamblea”.
14 de julio
Esta mañana, nos levantamos temprano con un delicioso desayuno de gallo pinto y empanadas de plátano, así como mango fresco y jugo. Nos reunimos todos para subirnos al bus y conducirnos a La Salle Universidad del Tecnología en Leon. Allí nos recibieron y nos contaron una breve historia de la universidad. Nos dividimos en dos grupos, uno de ellos visitó un aula para aprender sobre los diferentes tipos de energía renovable, así como para ver y participar en demostraciones. El otro grupo vio una demostración sobre cómo hacer un combustible más sostenible utilizando estiércol animal, incluso viendo ante nuestros propios ojos cómo se creaba una llama a partir del proceso. Después de un almuerzo de pizza, cambiamos de grupo y luego regresamos a casa. Luego tuvimos lecciones de español y terminamos el día con un juego de “Corazones”, cena y asamblea.
15 de julio
Hoy Julio 15 nos pudimos dormir más tarde que el día anterior, y fue muy apreciado por todos en el grupo. Aparte de eso nuestro desayuno fue huevos y jamón con un poquito de frutita. Después tuvimos un receso pequeño antes de empezar la próxima clase de español o currículo. El currículo fue muy interesante y divertido porque con la primera parte siendo bien interactivo sobre diferentes aspectos de nuestra identidad y como hace una parte en nuestras vidas y como interactuamos con otras personas. La segunda parte fue una lesión y discusión de privilegio específicamente privilegio blanco y como privilegio se aparece diferente en nuestras vidas. Aparte de eso nuestros como un grupo nos estamos acercando mucho más porque tenemos sesiones de grupos dinámicas y después teníamos tiempo libre. Y todos nos vamos y disfrutamos un juego de futbol tenis, cartas, y juegos de mafia en nuestros momentos libres.
