Curriculum y Cumple
Today, we woke up at 7:30 to a delicious breakfast of cornflakes and fruit slices. We enjoyed our breakfasts and then shifted to our Spanish/Leadership Training section of the day where we split into groups. Two groups spent two hours in this trip’s final Spanish classes with Julio and Gabriela. Another group switched between Juan Carlos and Jonathan for leadership. Juan Carlos led a highly informative section on the effects of the U.S. government attempting to seize control over various Central American countries; while Jonathan led a great, engaging section on privilege and allyship. Next, we took a break for lunch, which included a tasty roast chicken, rice, and tortillas. After lunch, the groups switched, and we continued our Spanish and leadership training for the next two hours. When classes and training ended, we took a nice long break, during which we said our goodbyes to Julio and Gabriela, and some people worked out. We’ll miss you guys! Later tonight, we plan to celebrate Isaac’s birthday with a cake and piñata.
Hoy nos despertamos a las 7:30 y teníamos un desayuno delicioso de cornflakes y fruta. Luego teníamos clase de español y currículo donde dividíamos en grupos. Dos grupos tuvieron clase de español y dos tuvieron currículo con Juan Carlos y Jonathan. Juan Carlos tenía una clase muy informativo sobre los efectos de Los Estados Unidos cuando intentaron a controlar los gobiernos de países centroamericanos. Jonathan tenía una discusión de privilegio y alianza. Luego tomamos un descanso para almorzar que incluyo pollo, arroz, y tortillas. Después de almuerzo, los grupos cambiaron y continuaron nuestras clases de español y currículo. Cuando terminamos clase, descansamos mucho y nos despedimos a Julio y Gabriela, nuestros maestros de español. Vamos a extrañar los mucho. Esta noche, vamos a celebrar el cumpleaños de Isaac con un pastel y piñata.
Cambio de Casa
Today we woke up bright and early to say goodbye to our wonderful house in Poneloya. We had eggs and spinach and gallo pinto for breakfast before finalizing all of our packing. Once done, we took our bags out to Don Beto’s bus and helped him load the luggage. We finally got on the bus and set course for Somoto. On the way, we enjoyed the view of the lushes green Nicaraguan countryside and several cordillera volcanoes, including the colossal San Cristobal. Throughout the course of our drive, we passed through plain lands, dense forest, and eventually into the highlands where we passed through the towns of San Isidro and Estelí. After 5 1/2 hours of driving and the occasional stop for snacks, we finally made it to our new home in Somoto. Prior to moving our luggage into our new dorms, we gave Don Beto our goodbyes as this would be the last time we saw him. Once we had settled into our dorms, it was time to have our late lunch which was eggs, vegetables, rice, and crispy tajas. Then we did leadership activities about how young people can be a catalyst for great change. After that, we had an hour of free time where some of us played soccer, others relaxed in their dorms, and some wrote the caption for the Instagram post. Afterward, we had dinner: cuajada, refried beans, over-easy eggs, and more crispy tajas. In addition, we had coffee and semitas for dessert. Finally, we had assemblea to give our recap of the day, rose/thorn/blossoms, and appreciations. We went over what we were doing the next day before heading to bed. Hasta mañana!
Hoy nos despertamos tempranito para despedirnos de nuestra casa en Poneloya. Desayunamos huevos con espinacas y Gallo Pinto, antes de terminar de empacar. Una vez hecho, llevamos nuestras maletas al autobús de Don Beto y le ayudamos a cargar el equipaje. Finalmente subimos al autobús y pusimos rumbo a Somoto. En el camino, disfrutamos de la vista de la exuberante y verde campiña nicaragüense y de varios volcanes de la cordillera, entre ellos el colosal San Cristóbal. A lo largo de nuestro viaje, pasamos por tierras llanas, densos bosques y, finalmente, por las tierras altas, donde pasamos por las ciudades de San Isidro y Estelí. Después de 5 horas y media de conducción y alguna que otra parada para comer, finalmente llegamos a nuestro nuevo hogar en Somoto. Antes de trasladar nuestro equipaje a nuestros nuevos dormitorios, nos despedimos de Don Beto, ya que sería la última vez que lo veríamos. Una vez instalados en nuestros dormitorios, llegó la hora de nuestro almuerzo tardío, que consistía en huevos, verduras, arroz y tajas crujientes. A continuación, tuvimos una hora de plan de estudios sobre cómo los jóvenes pueden ser un catalizador para un gran cambio. Después del plan de estudios, tuvimos una hora de tiempo libre en la que algunos jugamos al fútbol, otros se relajaron en sus dormitorios y algunos escribieron el pie de foto para el post de Instagram. Después, cenamos: cuajada, frijoles refritos, huevos estrellados y más tajas crujientes. Además, tomamos café y semitas de postre. Por último, tuvimos asamblea para dar nuestra recapitulación del día, rosa/espina/flores, y agradecimientos. Repasamos lo que íbamos a hacer al día siguiente antes de irnos a la cama. ¡Hasta mañana!
Grupo Fenix – Day 1
This morning, we woke up at seven and had coffee before leaving to start our work with Grupo Phoenix. Following a twenty-minute drive, we arrived at the Mujeres Solares restaurant and had some delicious fruit bowls. As we ate, we watched the Macho Raton traditional Nicaraguan dance performed by two members of Grupo Phoenix. Then we watched a presentation about the founding of Grupo Phoenix. After receiving more bowls of fruit, we split up into our three groups. One group went to the Montana Solar and learned how to make and apply organic insecticide made from the Madero Negro. The other group repaired solar ovens that are used by Mujeres Solares. After a presentation on the usage of photovoltaic energy in communities, the last group constructed a solar panel system. Then we had an exquisite lunch of vegetables, chicken, tortillas, lentils, papaya juice, and lollipops. After the meal, we went to a different activity. We then ran to the bus in the pouring rain to drive back to Somoto. During free time we either played cards, soccer, met with our mentors or napped. Before dinner, we had an evaluation where we reflected on our time in Leon. Our dinner consisted of gallo pinto, sausage, eggs, tortillas, and avocado. Afterward, we had group activity where we brought up some pressing issues that we want to resolve. Finishing up the day we had a short Asamblea and time for relaxation. See you tomorrow!
Esta mañana nos hemos levantado a las siete y hemos tomado un café antes de salir para empezar nuestro trabajo con el Grupo Phoenix. Tras un viaje de veinte minutos en auto, llegamos al restaurante Mujeres Solares y comimos unos deliciosos tazones de fruta. Mientras comíamos, vimos el baile tradicional nicaragüense Macho Raton, interpretado por dos miembros del Grupo Phoenix. Luego vimos una presentación sobre la fundación del Grupo Phoenix. Tras recibir más tazones de fruta, nos dividimos en nuestros tres grupos. Un grupo fue al Montana Solar y aprendió a fabricar y aplicar insecticida orgánico hecho con el Madero Negro. El otro grupo reparó los hornos solares que utilizan las Mujeres Solares. Después de una presentación sobre el uso de la energía fotovoltaica en las comunidades, el último grupo construyó un sistema de paneles solares. Luego tuvimos un exquisito almuerzo de verduras, pollo, tortillas, lentejas, jugo de papaya y paletas. Después de la comida fuimos a una actividad diferente. A continuación, corrimos al autobús bajo la lluvia torrencial para volver a Somoto. Durante el tiempo libre jugamos a las cartas, al fútbol, nos reunimos con nuestros mentores o dormimos la siesta. Antes de la cena tuvimos una evaluación en la que reflexionamos sobre nuestro tiempo en León. Nuestra cena consistió en gallo pinto, salchicha, huevos, tortillas y aguacate. Después tuvimos una dinámica de grupo donde planteamos algunos temas urgentes que queremos resolver. Para terminar el día tuvimos una breve Asamblea y tiempo para relajarnos. ¡Nos vemos mañana!
Grupo Fenix – Day 2
Good morning! We started off our day with breakfast at Mujeres Solares: gallo pinto, spinach scrambled eggs, and plantains. Then we broke off into our groups, two journeyed to the Montana Solar, and the other repaired solar systems in the Centro Solar. One of the groups that went to the Montana Solar built a solar oven out of bricks, mud, and an oil barrel. The other went to learn about organic insecticide. Following, all of the groups came together and had caldo for lunch that consisted of steak, broth, vegetables, plantains, and some sweet tamarind juice on the side. Proceeding the meal, we switched activities. After three hours we returned to the bus, thus concluding our second to last day with Grupo Phoenix. Until tomorrow!
¡Buenos días! Hoy empezamos nuestro día con un desayuno de reyes que llevaba gallo pinto, huevo revuelto con espinaca, y plátano macho. Después nos dividimos en nuestros tres grupos, unos fueron a la Montana Solar y el otro ayudo a reparar el sistema solar del Centro Solar. Un grupo de la Montana construyo un horno solar de ladrillos, lodo, y un barril de petróleo. El otro grupo de la montaña hizo insecticida orgánico. Luego, todos los grupos se reunieron y almorzaron caldo de verduras, vegetales, y plátanos machos en conjunto con un sabroso jugo de tamarindo. Procediendo el almuerzo, nos dividimos una vez en nuestros grupos. Al pasar tres horas en nuestras actividades, concluimos nuestro penúltimo día con Grupo Fénix y regresamos a los dormitorios. ¡HASTA MANANA!
Cañon de Somoto / Somoto Canyon
Today we visited Somoto Canyon. We started with a short walk to the river, then followed along the river on a boat. We learned about the ecosystem of the canyon and various plants and animals. We then switched to tubes and saw more of the canyon. We had the chance to swim and had a delicious lunch just outside the canyon. We came back to the hostel and had leadership activities in the afternoon.
Hoy visitamos el canon de Somoto. Empezamos con una pequeña caminata hacia el rio, luego seguimos por el rio en bote. Aprendimos sobre los ecosistemas del canon y diferentes plantas y animales. Después cambiamos a flotadores y observamos más del canon. Tuvimos la oportunidad de nadar y almorzamos afuera del canon. Regresamos al hospedaje y tuvimos currículo por la tarde.
