Olas y Cerros: Adventures in Costa Rica

Week One

We spent this first week at CATIE, an agricultural research institute in Turrialba, Costa Rica. We helped take care of the goats and volunteered in the botanical garden. However, we didn’t just stay on-site! Nearby is the Nortico cacao farm, where we spent a morning touring, learning about the process of growing cacao, and even making our very own chocolate– although some samples turned out better than others, they were all delish.

The very next day, we survived the active Turrialba volcano! We woke up at 5:00 am to hike around the skirt of the mountain and learn about its history, and its last eruption.

We closed out the week with a cheese tour at RETUS, a farming initiative near Turrialba that taught us how to milk cows, make cheese, and create a business that sustains community life. It was truly a privilege to learn from them and help them out with some gardening and livestock care as well!

In between these exciting excursions, we learned Spanish, played tag with local kids, organized soccer games, and continued volunteering at CATIE. After such a busy week, you’d think we’d be exhausted, but we pulled together an epic talent show the night before we left– our group is full of dancers, singers, comedians, and even an incredibly talented magician who blew us away!

Semana 1

Bienvenidos a los voluntarios de Olas y Cerros! Pasamos la primera semana en CATIE, una institución de investigación agrícola en Turrialba, Costa Rica. Cuidamos a las cabras e hicimos voluntariado en el jardín botánico. Pero, no nos quedamos toda la semana aca! La finca de cacao, Nortico, está muy cerca y pasamos una mañana haciendo un tour allí. Aprendimos sobre el proceso de la cultivación de cacao, e hicimos nuestros propios chocolates– aunque algunos quedaron más ricos que otros, ¡todos fueron deliciosos!

El próximo día, ¡sobrevivimos al volcán activo de Turrialba! Nos despertamos a las 5:00 am para caminar por la base de la montaña y aprender sobre su historia y la erupción reciente de 2016.

Terminamos la semana con un tour de queso en RETUS, una hacienda que nos enseñó cómo ordeñar vacas, hacer queso, y crear una iniciativa que sostiene la vida de la comunidad. Fue un privilegio aprender de ellos y ayudarles con los jardines y el ganado también.

Cuando no estábamos de excursión, aprendíamos español, jugamos tag con los niños locales, organizábamos mejengas, y continuábamos nuestro voluntariado en CATIE. Después de una semana tan ocupada, ud. pensaría que estaríamos completamente agotados, pero nos reunimos la última noche para hacer un concurso de talentos– nuestro grupo contiene bailarines, cantantes, humoristas, y un mago extremadamente talentoso quien nos impresionó bastante!

Ahora, nos vamos a la costa– nos vemos la proxima vez desde Parismina!!

Week 2

I write to you from the bus taking us from Parismina all the way inland to Heredia, where we will spend the rest of our trip. It’s been a pretty crazy week so far! We arrived in Parismina by boat– a beautiful way to start the week, wind in our hair and bright orange life jackets over our shirts!

We found our homestay families waiting for us at the dock, and walked back with them to our new homes for the week. It was a big adjustment, but it was so exciting to find these new connections, practice our Spanish, and most of all eat home-cooked meals! Although the weather started off beautiful and sunny, if a little hot, it quickly turned to rain and we watched on our host families’ televisions as a potential cyclone started heading our way. Hi there, tropical storm Bonnie! We did our best to cram in as much community life as we could over the next couple of days– we went on a canal tour to see some beautiful local animals, attended the community soccer game against Tortuguero, and drank countless fresh fruit milkshakes from a local soda, or small restaurant (shoutout Doña Olga!). In our volunteer work, we cleaned up the beach and the Casona, planted coconut trees, and walked along the shore at night in search of turtles– we found one, the first night, that laid 86 eggs right in front of our eyes!

However, as Bonnie got closer and the weather got more and more intense, we knew we had to say goodbye. We spent the last day making bracelets and empanadas with some wonderful community members, then attended an artisanal fair and a lovely goodbye dinner.

We woke up early this morning to leave, once again via boat. It has been a wonderful week, and we all miss Parismina already, but we can’t wait to see what Finca Vikingos has in store for us!

Semana 2

Les escribo del autobús que nos lleva desde Parismina hasta Heredia, donde nos vamos a quedar para el resto del programa. Esta semana fue, de verdad, una locura! Llegamos a Parismina en lanchas, que fue una comienza bonita para la semana, con el viento en nuestro cabello y chalecos inflables anaranjados sobre nuestras camisas! Conocimos a nuestras familias anfitrionas en el muelle, y caminamos con ellos a nuestras casas durante la semana. Fue un cambio grande, pero estuvimos muy emocionados hacer estas nuevas conexiones, practicar el español, y más que todo comer comida hecha en casa! A

unque el tiempo estaba lindo y soleado al principio, empezó a llover y miramos en los televisores de nuestras familias anfitrionas mientras que un posible ciclón venía hacia nosotros. Hola, tormenta tropical Bonnie!! Hicimos lo que pudimos para tener bastante experiencias en la comunidad en los últimos días– fuimos en un tour de canales para ver unos animales locales e interesantes, asistimos al partido de fútbol (Parismina vs. Tortuguero), y tomamos muchísimos batidos de fruta fresca de una soda local (gracias Doña Olga)! En nuestro voluntariado, limpiamos la playa y la casona, plantamos cocos, y, por la noche, caminamos por la playa buscando tortugas– encontramos a una, la primera noche, que puso 86 huevos– sería difícil creer, si no lo hubiéramos visto!

Pero Bonnie nos acercó, el clima se ponía más intenso cada día, y sabíamos que teníamos que despedirnos. Pasamos nuestro último día haciendo pulseras y empanadas con miembros de la comunidad, y después fuimos a una feria artesanal y una cena de despedida agridulce. Nos despertamos muy temprano hoy para irnos, otra vez por lancha, pero esta vez en una lluvia intensa! Ha sido una semana maravillosa, y ya extrañamos mucho a Parismina, pero estamos emocionados a ver lo que nos espera en Finca Vikingos!

Week 3

Bye for now, Olas y Cerros! It is time to head back to the States! We’ve spent the last week at Finca Vikingos, a luxurious farm in Heredia. Although this was not the end to the trip that we anticipated, we made the best of the situation and had an absolute blast! We did some volunteer work at a nearby park in Santa Barbara, cleaning the park and painting some benches to make it a more beautiful place for folks to hang out. We also cleaned up at Finca Vikingos, especially on the front lawn and the trails.

Speaking of the trails, we spent some of our time there walking through coffee plants up to beautiful lookouts, where we were able to marvel at the gorgeous views.

Our last day took us to a coffee plantation of Cafe Britt, where we went on an entertaining and informative tour to learn about coffee production and quality in Costa Rica, as well as taste some excellent cups of coffee that kept us up and energized for the rest of the day!

Back at Finca, we maximized the rest of our time together by putting on a movie night, an independence day dinner, a karaoke night, and even a celebratory bonfire!

We have created so many memories and new friends over this program, and simply enjoying each other’s company has been one of the highlights for many. We held a bittersweet, tearful candlelight ceremony to say goodbye, and then hopped on that 3 am flight back to Houston, and then home. It has been a wonderful trip, and we have made so many connections that we will not soon forget. Until next time, amigos!

Semana 3

¡Hasta luego, Olas y Cerros! ¡Ya regresamos a los Estados Unidos! Hemos pasado la última semana en Finca Vikingos, una finca muy lujosa en Heredia. Aunque esto no fue el fin del programa que anticipamos, sacamos el mayor provecho de la situación y nos divertimos mucho! Hicimos voluntariado cerca de la finca en un parque en Santa Barbara. Limpiamos el parque y pintamos unas bancas para hacerlo más atractivo para la gente de la comunidad. También limpiamos el césped y los senderos de Finca Vikingos.

Hablando de los senderos, pasamos mucho tiempo caminando por las plantas de café hacia miradores increíbles, donde podíamos ver vistas hermosísimas.

El último día, fuimos a una plantación de café en Café Britt, donde asistimos a un tour divertido e informativo y aprendimos sobre la producción y la calidad de café en Costa Rica. También probamos unas tazas de café excelentes, que nos despertaron y activaron para el resto del día!

En la Finca Vikingos, nos dimos cuenta que fue necesario maximizar nuestro tiempo juntos– teníamos una noche de películas, una cena del 4 de julio (día de independencia estadounidense), una noche de karaoke, y una fogata para celebrar!

Hemos creado muchos recuerdos y amigos nuevos en este programa, y disfrutar de nuestra compañía ha sido un highlight de muchos de los voluntarios. Hicimos una agridulce, llorosa ceremonia de velas para cerrar la sesión y despedirnos, y después nos embarcamos al vuelo a las 3 de la mañana a Houston, y luego a casa. Ha sido un viaje maravilloso, y hemos hecho muchas conexiones que no vamos a olvidar. Hasta la próxima vez, amigos!
