Olas y Cerros: A Transformative Experience for Volunteers

In the heart of Costa Rica, where the waves of the Atlantic Ocean meet the majesty of the mountains, lies a volunteer program that seeks not only to impact local communities but also to transform its participants. Olas y Cerros is a project that attracts young volunteers, offering them the opportunity to engage in various activities, learn about Costa Rican culture, and grow personally. Over the past few weeks, our group of volunteers has experienced unforgettable moments that have left a deep imprint on our hearts.

Week 1: Connections and New Beginnings

The first week began with the arrival of volunteers in San José, Costa Rica. The excitement was palpable; some were arriving in the country for the first time, while others were returning to continue their contributions. After an energizing typical breakfast, the journey began toward Turrialba, where we spent two days in training at CATIE. Here, we familiarized ourselves with the program’s protocols and expectations. We had the opportunity to meet our fellow volunteers, some of whom would become lifelong friends.

We then traveled to a beautiful, picturesque community. The following days were a mix of cultural and volunteer activities. From preparing tamales in the community hall to visiting historic sites like the Guayabo Monument, each activity offered a new way to connect with the local culture. One of the highlights was the visit to Casa Mía, where we learned about sustainable agriculture and its positive impact on the community.

In the realm of volunteering, our group worked at the local school, where we had the opportunity to play and learn with the children. Drawing, painting murals, and playing sports was not only fun but also taught us the importance of education and play in the lives of the children.

Week 2: Deepening the Experience

The second week began with a visit to the Jorge Debravo Educational Center, where a civic event took place with a vibrant celebration of local culture. The joy and energy were contagious as we enjoyed music, dance, and traditional food. This event not only allowed us to learn more about Costa Rican culture but also helped us integrate into the community and build connections with local residents.

During this week, we focused more on community work. We collaborated with the local development association in Guayabo, participating in activities such as park clean-ups and painting communal areas. These activities made us reflect on the importance of caring for our environment and how our actions can contribute to a healthier planet. At the end of the day, the satisfaction of seeing a clean and orderly area was a powerful reminder that everyone can make a difference.

Spending free time with our host families was one of the most enriching experiences. Through conversations and daily activities, we learned about their customs, stories, and struggles. These moments of connection reminded us of the importance of empathy and cultural understanding, fundamental aspects of any volunteer program.

Week 3: Reflections and Goodbyes

In the third week, we traveled to Parismina, a coastal community known for its natural beauty, sea turtle conservation, and welcoming culture. Here began the culmination of all our experiences. We started to reflect on what we had learned and how we had grown. Activities continued with volunteering at schools, where we helped children learn and grow through art and sports. The bracelet-making class and dance class were particularly memorable, as they allowed us to share a part of our culture with them.

One of the most significant events was the talk and tour on biodiversity, where we learned about Costa Rica’s rich flora and fauna. The importance of conservation and respect for nature became recurring themes in our discussions. Each day, we became more aware of our responsibility toward the planet.

The moment of saying goodbye was emotional. Tears and laughter mixed as we shared our experiences and memories. We had formed a community among ourselves, a group that had supported each other through three weeks of work, learning, and fun. The candle ceremony was a beautiful closure to our experience. We came together to share what we had learned and how we planned to apply those lessons in our future lives.

Lessons Learned

Throughout our time with Olas y Cerros, we learned invaluable lessons that we will carry with us forever:

  1. The Importance of Community: Working as a team and collaborating with local communities taught us that together we are stronger. Small actions can have a significant impact when done in unity.
  2. The Value of Empathy: Interacting with host families and community children taught us to be more understanding and tolerant. Every person has a story, and listening to those stories can change our perspective.
  3. Environmental Responsibility: The experience of beach clean-ups and reforestation reminded us that we are all responsible for the planet and that every action counts. Protecting our environment is crucial for future generations.
  4. Personal Growth: Living with people from different backgrounds and cultures helped us grow as individuals. We learned to step out of our comfort zones, be more adaptable, and appreciate diversity.

Olas y Cerros was not just a volunteer program; it was a transformative experience that allowed us to grow, learn, and connect with others. We are grateful to all who made this adventure possible: the host families, youth leaders, AMIGOS staff, and, of course, our fellow volunteers. Each of us will return home with a new perspective and a renewed passion for community service.

We hope more people will join this beautiful project in the future. The waves and hills of Costa Rica will continue to be a place where hearts meet and souls are enriched. Until next time!
