For this week’s blog we want to feature each of our Project Supervisors’ routes so that you get a glimpse of how the volunteers have been doing on their very first week in community.

Gabriel’s Route / La Ruta de Gabriel

Both Tres Charcos and Cachón’s volunteers are doing an amazing job with their local youth! I have seen remarkable growth in each volunteer by improving their Spanish and strategizing new ways to work alongside local leaders in each community. Jonah and Jeremy have bonded with their community by playing board games with both the adults and children in Tres Charcos. Meanwhile Juan Pablo and Roman have become key players on their basketball and volleyball teams in Cachón.

Tanto los voluntarios de Tres Charcos como los de Cachón están haciendo un trabajo increíble con sus jóvenes locales. He visto un notable crecimiento en cada voluntario al mejorar su español y al planear nuevas formas de trabajar junto a los líderes locales en cada comunidad. Jonah y Jeremy se han ganado el amor de su comunidad y les encanta jugar juegos de mesa con los adultos y los niños en Tres Charcos. Mientras tanto, Jean Paul y Roman se han convertido en jugadores clave en sus equipos de baloncesto y voleibol.

Alex’s Route / La Ruta de Alex

My volunteers had a great first week in community! Aerin, Emily, and Kerawin in Saladillo held campamentos with youth everyday, visited the natural land pools at La Cecia, and toured the local papaya farms. Thomas and Jack in Las Salinas have led daily volleyball practices with the local girls team and held campamentos with the town’s youth. Karli and Emma in La Lista have enjoyed their community’s festive Patronales week and worked alongside local youth and adult groups to hold daily campamentos.

Mis participantes tuvieron una maravillosa primera semana en sus comunidades! Aerin, Emily y Kerawyn en Saladillo coordinaron campamentos diarios con jovenes locales, visitaron el río y las piscinas naturales de la Cecia y visitaron a una granja de lechozas. Thomas y Jack en las Salinas dirigieron prácticas de voleibol diarias con el equipo de niñas local y tuvieron campamentos diarios con todos los jóvenes en la comunidad. Karli y Emma en la Lista han disfrutado a la semana festiva de Patronales en su comunidad y trabajaron con jóvenes y el comité gestor de la comunidad para tener campamentos diarios.

Gabby’s Route / La Ruta de Gabby

In Gabby’s route, there are four unique coastal communities: Fudeco, La Ciénega, Ojeda, and Oviedo. In Fudeco we have Jack and Usberio. The two enjoy going to the beautiful Cacao River in their community and playing volleyball with the local youth. In La Ciénega, there are two volunteers: Hattie and Belle. The girls love to practice with the volleyball team in their community court on the beach and walk through the paths in the mountains. The next community, Ojeda, is where Max and Gavin live. The two are having a blast playing dominoes and facilitating super popular campamentos in this beachside community. Finally, in Oviedo, the largest of the four communities, are Luke and Sam. They are excited to host the volleyball tournament there and practice every day in the sporting complex. When they are not practicing for the tournament, both of them like to play basketball with the local youth. Each of these communities have their unique attractions where the volunteers can enjoy their days and have fun!

En la mejor ruta del Proyecto, la ruta de Gabby, hay cuatro comunidades costales: Fudeco, La Ciénega, Ojeda, y Oviedo. Primero, en Fudeco viven Jack y Usberio. Los dos les gusta ir al bellísimo río Cacao en la comunidad y jugar voleibol con los jóvenes. En La Ciénega, se quedan dos voluntarias, Hattie y Belle. Las chicas les encanta practicar con el equipo de voleibol en una cancha en la playa y caminar por las calles y en las montañas. La próxima comunidad, Ojeda, está donde vive Max y Gavin. Los dos se divierten muchísimo jugando dominó y facilitando campamentos que son super populares con los niños y niñas de la comunidad. Finalmente, Oviedo, una comunidad demasiado grande, viven Luke y Sam. Ellos están emocionados para tener el torneo de voleibol allá y practican cada día en el multiuso. Cuando no están practicando para el torneo, a los dos les gusta jugar baloncesto con los jóvenes, y así cada una de estas comunidades tiene su atractivos donde se pueden pasar días interesantes.

Elsy’s Route/La Ruta de Elsy

This week on route, I visited four different communities where I found the volunteers enjoying Dominican culture. They are learning to dance bachata, play dominoes, and cook moro (rice and beans) like experts! In the evenings, the volunteers often walk with local youth and explore their communities. They also enjoy family time as they drink a cup of coffee. Many volunteers’ favorite part is the campamentos, where they hold activities and receive lots of hugs and laughs from the kids.

Esta semana fue mi primera vez en ruta. Visite diferentes comunidades y al llegar encontré a los participantes disfrutando mucho de la cultura Dominicana, mientras aprenden a bailar bachata, jugar dominó, y cocinan moro como unos expertos. Por las tardes los participantes caminan con los jóvenes y exploran sus comunidades. También, disfrutan del tiempo en familia mientras toman una taza de cafe. La parte favorita de los participantes es los campamentos donde hacen muchas dinámicas, reciben muchos abrazos de los niños y ríen sin parar.

Sucre’s Route/La Ruta de Sucre

Wow, this past week was jam-packed with excitement and hard work! Not only did we have the national volunteer training but also the host family training. It was amazing to see the eagerness of the host families to meet the volunteers and welcome them into their homes.

The national volunteers are extremely excited to get their AMIGOS summer started. These volunteers are actively involved in their communities and work closely with our partner agency, Plan International. They are excited to have a cross cultural experience this summer through living in other communities and working with international volunteers.

Now that the trainings are over everyone is getting ready to receive the volunteers and begin what is to be an exciting AMIGOS summer!

Wow, la semana pasada estuvo llena de emoción y trabajo duro. No solo tuvimos la capacitación de voluntarios nacionales, sino también la capacitación de la familia anfitriona. Fue asombroso ver el entusiasmo de las familias anfitrionas por conocer a los voluntarios y darles la bienvenida a sus hogares.

Los voluntarios nacionales están extremadamente emocionados de comenzar el verano de Amigos. Estos voluntarios participan activamente en sus comunidades y trabajan en estrecha colaboración con nuestra agencia asociada PLAN INTERNATIONAL. Están entusiasmados de tener una experiencia intercultural este verano viviendo en otras comunidades y trabajando con voluntarios internacionales.

¡Ahora que los entrenamientos han terminado, todos se están preparando para recibir a los voluntarios y comenzar lo que será un emocionante verano de Amigos!

Alicia’s Route/La Ruta de Alicia

Route this week went really well! First I went to the region of Cabral to visit the communities of Tierra Blanca, Guayuyo, and Pueblo Arriba; the volunteers there are awesome. Their campamentos were successful and they are finding new ways to handle the children every day. Next I went to the beautiful mountainous community of La Guázara, where I found the volunteers playing basketball with the kids. In this smaller community, the volunteers can always found accompanied by kids.

Ruta esta semana fue súper bien. Primero fui a Cabral para visitar Tierra Blanca, Guayuyo, y Pueblo Arriba, y los participantes son geniales. Sus campamentos fueron exitosos y están encontrando mejores maneras cada día para manejar los niños. Después fui a la hermosa comunidad en las montañas, “La Guazara,” donde encontré los voluntarios jugando basquetbol con los niños. Porque esta comunidad es más pequeña, los voluntarios rara vez se pierden, y siempre se encuentran acompañados de niños.

Aimee’s Route/La Ruta de Aimee

My route consists of the seaside communities of Manuel Goya, Juancho, and Colonia Juancho. Time spent traveling between these communities goes by quickly as the drive includes beautiful scenery of the coast, mountains, and other communities along the way. It’s always fun to see our volunteers eager and excited for the campamentos. All of the volleyball teams are set up for the upcoming tournaments, and I am sure all teams will be a success!

Esta semana mi ruta consistió de Manuel Goya, Juancho y Colonia Juancho. Aunque el viaje está retirado, las horas se van rápido cuando estoy viendo las escenarios hermosos de la costa, montañas, y las otras comunidades por el camino. Siempre es divertido ver nuestros voluntarios emocionados para los campamentos. Todos los equipos de voleibol están hechos, y estoy segura que he visto los camiones del torneo practicando!
