Santa Elena: Hola from Muey

Hola from Muey,

We’re so sad to be leaving here tomorrow morning. Over the past month, we’ve been able to experience everything that our area has to offer. We’ll miss our visits to a local cafecito where we planned our activities while sipping jugo de mora y jugo de maracuya, and where we eventually became friends with the owners as well as Glory House, a local Colombian restaurant where we enjoyed chorizos almost every day (driven by Gideon’s massive appetite) after finishing our work.

Being close to both Salinas and Libertad, we had the privilege of taking fun family trips there together on the weekends. We’ll miss having snacks and food vendors driving by right when we are hungry, especially everything coconut (coco rico, raw coconut, coconut ice cream). We’ll miss watching movies and playing board games almost nightly with our families, the uno obsession was real. We’ll miss the constant ambient background noise of “CAMARONES CAMARONESSS UN DOLLAR”, which we did end up trying and they were actually delicious shrimp. We’ll miss going out to watch the local dance groups’ practices, coming up on stage against our will, and teaching them a bit of American culture through the Cotton Eyed Joe. We’ll miss Gideon’s 7 cats, particularly the kittens, and Bella’s neighbors’ puppies, even though we couldn’t hold them. We’ll miss our ECAs and all of the kids who attended.

We really appreciated getting to connect with each and every one of them. We were able to find something new every time we got the chance to explore more, and we leave imagining all the things we never came across. We’ll miss working on our park and the amazing opportunity to work with the families in the area. We’ll miss talking to people passing by and telling them about AMIGOS and our project. We’ll miss getting to paint a mural with everyone who came out and helped us. Most of all, we’ll miss all of the incredible people we’ve met during our time here. The friends we’ve made through working on the park, walking through town, attending family gatherings, and in so many other ways have made this trip what it was. Most of all, we’ll miss our wonderful host families without whom we would not have made it. They fully adopted us into the family, helping us not only within the home, but also every step of the way in our project, and attended all of our ECAs to help things run smoothly. We hope to be able to come back to Muey someday in the future to experience all of these things again.

Chau for now,

Bella and Gideon

Hola from Muey,

Bella y Gideon
