Visiting Bambil Collao and Bambil Deshecho

Sebastian with his guanabana

Hi, my name is Sebastian Farfán and I’m a Program Coordinator for the Santa Elena Project.

Previously, I worked for AMIGOS programs in Ecuador and now, I’m excited to have the opportunity to work with communities. I am passionate about this because in my country, Colombia, I usually work with communities and families.

This past week, I had the opportunity to travel and tour the north of Santa Elena, meeting beautiful people along the way.

I visited the “sister” communities of Bambil Collao and Bambil Deshecho, with the immense fortune of getting to know the host families of AMIGOS, many of whom are volunteers with Plan International, our partner agency.

One of these families is headed by Leonor, who for years has run a successful business, along with her neighbors, raising turkeys. I visited her family and her home, which consists of her four children and her husband. I spent a very pleasant evening with them, sharing sugar cane and talking with the father about his work on a plantain plantation, known here in Ecuador as VERDE.

I also spent time getting to know the community, guided by Karina Catuto, another one of the women who will open her doors with immense affection for our volunteers. She is the vice-president of the community and is very motivated to work with us and to let everyone know about PLAN’s work plan together with AMIGOS.

The next day I visited the neighboring community, Bambil Deshecho, where I met a family that has roots for generations. Cousins, uncles, and aunts live within walking distance and create a warm and very welcoming environment. This family is led by Rosa Catuto, who along with her husband and daughters, are PLAN volunteers and for years have worked on the community council, which demonstrates their love and infinite respect for the place where they live.

They welcomed me into their home with a delicious dinner. I learned about the family traditions and with the father, we went for a walk through the main park and had a colada with a delicious cheese sandwich. He is very proud of this town, and he mentions that his mother is just a few steps away, his brothers and his family motivate him to want the best for them, and he likes to go out and walk the streets, where people know him, greet him and breathe the tranquility of a community that ensures the safety and welfare of others.

Right in front of his house lives Jacinto, a farmer who opened the doors of his house and showed us the harvest of the day – Guanábanas – and gave me a huge one. He says proudly that he lives in a humble way, but his doors are always open to anyone who wants to enter and share his food.

Guanabana

In Bambil Deshecho, we will design together with the children a beautiful mural that shows the importance of caring for the youth, care for the environment, and reflects what was learned in the workshops that PLAN and our volunteers will carry out.
