Volunteer and Excursion Work in Panama

By: Cinco S. and Ian W.

Hello, hi! Our names are Cinco and Ian, and we are AMIGOS volunteers on the Discover Panama project. We are writing this blog post about our time in Panama. During our time in Panama, we had many excursions. These include walking in the Panamanian jungle, swimming in a waterfall, and going on nightly turtle walks. During our waterfall excursion, we were located at the coast of the Panamanian border with the Pacific Ocean. We walked along a beaten path to see the beautiful Panamanian jungle that showed the heart of Panama. From the beautiful green jungle to the soothing thrash of the waterfall, I recommend that you see Panama if you enjoy traveling. During the nights at Mata Oscura, turtles lay their eggs on the beach. During our time we were not able to see any, but we were able to see the beautiful Panamanian night sky.

When we were in Panama we did volunteer jobs and we helped the community. Out first volunteer job was at the recycling center. We put different plastics and cardboard in different baskets. In Panama, they care about recycling a lot because they need to reuse plastics. Our second volunteer job was at the orchid garden. While we were there we washed the rocks and labeled the plants. Our third volunteer job was turtle patrol. At 10:00 pm walked along the beach to find turtle eggs. Our main job there was to conserve them and make sure people don’t take them. Another volunteer job was trash collection on the beach. We walked along the beach with another group to pick up aluminum, plastic, and cardboard. We checked if any animals ate parts of them, and tracked where they did eat them. Another volunteer job was working at the visitor center for the turtle conservation project. We worked on a few different jobs to make sure that the visitor center was nice for people to visit. There were four main jobs: dig a hole in which put to organic resources, rake the sandy area, clean up the beach frontline, and clean the bathrooms.

During our time in Panama, we met many people, such as Jacinto, who is the president of the turtle conservation organization, which is an AMIGOS partner association, or Nelson, who was our friendly Panamanian lifeguard. From all the different people and the different friendly faces we met along the way, exploring Panama was one of the most fun experiences and something that we all strongly recommend to anyone with an explorer spirit.

Hola, hola!
