What a first week! Participants are now in community, conducting the community-based initiative process and carrying out extracurricular activities alongside local students and their AMIGOS partners. Participants arrived to community last weekend after a long yet enriching two days of briefing, where we reviewed themes of health and safety, project components, and exploration of their personal leadership. Participants also had a chance to walk around the beautiful downtown Merida and explore some of the enchantment that the “White City” has to offer. We concluded with an activity called Touch the Shoulder, where participants went around the circle and touched the shoulder of participants who demonstrated compassion, leadership, energy and other criteria.

Me llamo Gustavo y en lo personal me encanta lo que es AMIGOS para mi resumidamente es una forma excelente de de cambiar nuestras perspectivas y abrir nuestras mentes a nuevas culturas y al mismo tiempo podemos colaborar con nuestra comunidad anfitriona. Conozco este proyecto ya años atrás pero he estado más cerca de él desde el 2014 por que mi comunidad recibió participantes de amigos y desde entonces he estado en distintos campamentos en parques nacionales en Costa Rica y otras actividades que son muy lindas experiencias. Ahora estoy participando en el proyecto de de Yucatan, fue algo de último minuto pero estoy seguro de que fue la elección correcta, llevo ya varios días en México de los cuales la mayor parte han sido en un hotel para participar de una capacitación con otros voluntarios y a sido muy interesante conocer personas de distintas nacionalidades, distintas culturas y distintas formas de ver las cosas y es interesante cómo en tan poco tiempo puedes sentirte muy bien con personas que no conocías hace 2 días y de igual manera con el equipo de AMIGOS.
El día viernes 6 de julio partimos hacía nuestras comunidades en lo personal con algo de nervios y ansiedad por que es algo nuevo para mi la idea de pasar más de un mes con una familia anfitriona, bueno partimos temprano hacia mi nueva comunidad, un lugar muy humilde y caliente pero lo que más me agrada de este lugar aparte de su gastronomía es su gente sencilla alegre y muy amable que te hacen sentir como en casa, cuando llegué al pueblo nos recibieron algunos miembros de la comunidad que me guiaron hasta la casa de mi nueva familia donde me recibieron muy felices y con mi familia anfitriona. Me llevo muy bien como si ya nos conociéramos de hace tiempo y hasta ahora esa es mi experiencia y puedo decir que estoy muy feliz de haber tomado esa decisión de último momento. Y para finalizar esperó que en estos días que aún me faltan sean muy buenos y en los que pueda seguir creciendo como persona.
My name is Gustavo and I personally love what AMIGOS does. It is an excellent way to change our perspectives and open our minds to new cultures while collaborating with our host community. I have been familiar with this project since 2014, when my community in Costa Rica received AMIGOS participants from the U.S. During this time, I have been involved in campamentos and visited national parks with AMIGOS, as well as other activities. Now I am participating in the Yucatan project, and I am sure it was the right choice! I have been in Mexico for several days now. So far, most of my time was in a hotel to participate in the gateway training with other volunteers. It was very interesting to meet people of different nationalities, as well as learn about other ways of seeing things and it is interesting how you can feel comfortable with other people in such a short amount of time.
On Friday, July 6th, we headed to our community placements with a little bit of nervousness and anxiety! We left early to head out to my community, a very humble and hot place but what I most like about this place (aside from the food!) is its cheerful and very friendly people that make you feel right at home. When I arrived, we were welcomed by some members of the community who guided me to my host family’s home. I am very happy with my host family and we get along very well – as if we have known each other for a long time! I am very happy to have made the decision to join AMIGOS as a participant. I hope that these days ahead of me continue to be good and that this time allows me to continue to grow as a person.
