Chimborazo: Survey Behind-The-Scenes

The survey week as a supervisor in the communities was incredible and exciting; for this week the main goal was to get to know the communities and the host families, the communities are in impressive places, surrounded by mountains and crossing rivers. Within each community, you can see that the people are very friendly, and you will see many farm animals up close. To get from one community to the next you have to walk several paths, but it is very difficult to get lost – because there will always be someone willing to help you reach your destination. As they are small communities, everyone knows each other, so you just have to ask for the house of the person you are looking for. The distances here can be a bit misleading and it seems that it is closer than it is, but definitely not on the road. You will never get bored because there is always something new to see!

La semana de survey como supervisora en las comunidades fue increíble y emocionante, para esta semana el objetivo principal era conocer las comunidades y las familias anfitrionas, las comunidades se encuentran en lugares impresionantes, rodeadas de montañas y cruzando ríos. Dentro de cada comunidad, puedes ver que la gente es muy amigable, y verás muchos animales de granja de cerca. Para ir de una comunidad a otra hay que recorrer varios caminos, pero es muy difícil perderse, porque siempre habrá alguien dispuesto a ayudarte a llegar a tu destino. Como son comunidades pequeñas, todo el mundo se conoce, así que basta con preguntar por la casa de la persona que se busca. Las distancias aquí pueden ser un poco engañosas y parece que está más cerca de lo que está, pero desde luego no en la carretera. Nunca te aburrirás porque siempre hay algo nuevo que ver.

 

Within the first family we met, there were many girls with whom we played soccer and they taught us to collect firewood to heat the house later. They were very excited to soon have a participant within the family, they showed us where they would stay and it was a very welcoming place, as well as the other family, especially the future host sister – was eager to teach her next brother Kiwchua and learn from him as well.

En la primera familia que conocimos, habían muchas niñas con las que jugamos fútbol y nos enseñaron a recoger leña para calentar la casa más tarde. Estaban muy ilusionadas por tener pronto un participante dentro de la familia, nos enseñaron donde se alojarían y era un lugar muy acogedor, al igual que la otra familia, especialmente la futura hermana de acogida – que estaba deseando enseñar kiwchua a su próximo hermano y aprender de él.

 

For the next community, I first met the lady who would host me and she bought me a lot of food when she found out that I had walked part of the way. Her son offered to accompany me to the other host houses to make sure I didn’t get lost along the way, and we managed to find everyone. Each family seemed very excited to receive a new member in the family. Within the third community, both host houses were neighbors as well as being relatives, so the volunteers who would stay here would be able to spend a lot of time together and get to know the whole family well. Within this family, although many of the children are already grown up and they live in different houses, they still come to visit them often. So there will always be people in the house willing to share about their culture!

At the same time, another survey was being completed nearby with three additional communities. Each community has been a very welcoming and amazing hosts. You will never be underfed under their care. Some of the things that the communities cooked included potatoes, carrots, fresh milk, avas, white corn, soup, rice, chicken, sheep, guinea pig, and cows. Most of the food that I received was freshly harvested. 

En la siguiente comunidad, conocí a la señora que me acogería y me compró un montón de comida cuando se enteró que había hecho parte del camino caminando. Su hijo se ofreció a acompañarme a las otras casas de familias anfitrionas para asegurarse de que no me perdiera por el camino, y conseguimos encontrar a todos. Cada familia estaba tan emocionada de recibir a un nuevo miembro en la familia. En la tercera comunidad, las dos casas de acogida eran vecinas además de familiares, por lo que los voluntarios que se quedaran aquí, podrán pasar mucho tiempo juntos y conocer bien a toda la familia. Dentro de esta familia, aunque muchos de los hijos ya son mayores y viven en casas diferentes, siguen viniendo a visitar a menudo. Así que siempre habrá gente en la casa dispuesta a compartir sobre su cultura!

Al mismo tiempo, se estaba completando otro “survey” en las cercanías con otras tres comunidades. Todas las comunidades han sido muy acogedoras e increíbles. Nunca estarás mal alimentado bajo su cuidado. Algunas de las cosas que las comunidades cocinaban incluían patatas, zanahorias, leche fresca, avas, maíz blanco, sopa, arroz, pollo, ovejas, cobaya y vacas. La mayoría de los alimentos que recibí estaban recién cosechados.

 

Every host family has been excited and filled with nervousness and joy. They have been preparing to be host families and are on track to attend all workshops necessary to be familiar with all the requirements. All host families have been confirmed and are awaiting for the volunteers to arrive. Some of the questions they have been asking are:

• Can I show the volunteer my everyday tasks?
• Will I be able to show them around the community?
• How would I know what food they like to give them?
• Can the volunteer spend time with their host siblings?

All valid questions –  the supervisors have answered all their questions making sure that they are ready to be host families. I noticed that families are mainly excited about having volunteers in their homes and want to give them the best experience possible. As always, AMIGOS is working closely with every member of the community and community partners to ensure all pieces are ready to kick off the summer!

 

Cada familia anfitriona ha estado emocionada y llena de nervios y alegría. Se han estado preparando para ser familias anfitrionas y están en camino de asistir a todos los talleres necesarios para familiarizarse con todos los requisitos. Todas las familias anfitrionas han sido confirmadas y están esperando a que lleguen los voluntarios. Algunas de las preguntas que han estado haciendo son:

• ¿Puedo mostrarle al voluntario mi día a día?
• ¿Podré mostrarles la comunidad?
• ¿Cómo puedo saber qué comida les gusta?
• ¿Puede el voluntario pasar tiempo con sus hermanos anfitriones?

Todas las preguntas válidas – los supervisores han respondido todas sus preguntas asegurándose de que estén listos para ser familias anfitrionas. Noté que las familias están principalmente emocionadas por tener voluntarios en sus hogares y quieren brindarles la mejor experiencia posible. Como siempre, AMIGOS está trabajando en estrecha colaboración con todos los miembros de la comunidad y los socios de la comunidad para garantizar que todas las piezas estén listas para comenzar el verano!
