Coclé: Bingo en Panamá
My stay so far in El Caimito in Panama has been great so far! This afternoon our neighbor/grandma Cheyla hosted a bingo game with people from around the community. At around 3, all the neighbors started coming over to our house for the game, bringing with them bags of food. They weren’t just small bags of candy or fruit – they were giant bags of rice and sugar. At first, I was super confused, “what were they going to do with all this food?” I thought. Then Cheyla told me that they were betting these bags of food in the bingo game.
She said the winner of each game won a bag of food. Sadly, I arrived too late for the game and all the seats were taken, but Cheyla said it was okay because they play every Monday, and I can play next week. So, for a minute, I stood and listened to the sound of the rain and the buzzing of mosquitoes, combined with the announcement of Spanish numbers and the occasional “BINGO!”. Then I went with the other kids out into the rainstorm and played soccer!
¡Mi estadía hasta ahora en El Caimito en Panamá ha sido excelente hasta ahora! Esta tarde, nuestra vecina/abuela Cheyla organizó un juego de bingo con personas de toda la comunidad. Alrededor de las 3, todos los vecinos comenzaron a venir a nuestra casa para el juego trayendo bolsas de comida. No eran solo pequeñas bolsas de dulces o frutas, sino que eran bolsas gigantes de arroz y azúcar. Al principio estaba súper confundida, “qué iban a hacer con toda esta comida?” pensé.
Entonces Cheyla me dijo que estaban apostando estas bolsas de comida en el juego de bingo. Ella dijo que el ganador de cada juego se ganaría una bolsa de comida. Lamentablemente, llegué demasiado tarde para el juego y todos los asientos estaban ocupados, pero Cheyla dijo que estaba bien, porque juegan todos los lunes y puedo jugar la próxima semana. Entonces, por un minuto, me paré y escuché el sonido de la lluvia y el zumbido de los mosquitos, combinado con el anuncio de números en español y el ocasional “¡BINGO!”. Luego salí con los otros niños a la tormenta y jugué al fútbol!
