Coclé: Halfway Through
Now that we are halfway through the project, I can confidently say this is the experience of a lifetime. I’ve been able to completely immerse myself in a community with so many amazing things I wouldn’t have experienced otherwise. Everyone is incredibly welcoming and have made me feel at home since the first day.
Even when I’m feeling lost, I can still find things that remind me of home, like the kindness of my host family or a cold coke from the local tienda. There are also plenty of new experiences that push me out of my comfort zone, like new foods or Panamanian slang. It’s been incredibly satisfying to work on our service project and watch it come together. Getting to learn how to build a structure in a team has been such a valuable experience.
On top of that, although daunting at first, ECAs have been so much fun. Getting to know and do activities with local youth are super fun and not as hard or scary as I first thought. As fun as a game of soccer with other teens or exploring the community is, my favorite part is getting to eat dinner with my host family. Whether it’s telling jokes or sharing stories, it’s always the best way to end the day.
Ahora que estamos a la mitad del proyecto, puedo decir con confianza que esta es la experiencia de mi vida. He podido sumergirme por completo en una comunidad con tantas cosas increíbles que de otra manera no habría experimentado. Todos son increíblemente acogedores y me han hecho sentir como en casa desde el principio.
Incluso cuando me siento perdido, todavía puedo encontrar cosas que me recuerdan a mi hogar, como la amabilidad de mi familia anfitriona o una coca cola fría de la tienda local. También hay muchas experiencias nuevas que me sacan de mi zona de confort, como comidas nuevas o jerga panameña. Ha sido increíblemente satisfactorio trabajar en nuestro proyecto de servicio y ver cómo se desarrolla. Llegar a aprender cómo construir una estructura en un equipo ha sido una experiencia muy valiosa.
Además de eso, aunque intimidante al principio, las ECA han sido muy divertidas. Conocer y hacer actividades con jóvenes locales es muy divertido y no es tan difícil ni aterrador como pensé al principio. Tan divertido como un partido de fútbol con otros adolescentes o explorar la comunidad, mi parte favorita es cenar con mi familia anfitriona. Ya sea contando chistes o compartiendo historias, siempre es la mejor manera de terminar el día.
