Discover AMIGOS: Mata Oscura

On our second week in Panama, we headed to a place called Mata Oscura, located in the province of Veraguas. We took a 6-hour ride from a previous place – Valle de Antón. We never imagined the wonderful experiences we would have in this magical place. We participated in different activities; however, we would like to talk about the most interesting ones. The first activities that stood out occurred on the first day; one of the activities that we also really enjoyed was making our own tamales, and another unexpected occurrence was seeing a turtle nesting on the beach nearby.
To begin with, we woke up very early in the morning and after breakfast, we hiked to the waterfalls. Before getting into the water, we met Mr. Secundino, a kind person who took us on an informative hike where we learned about fauna and flora. Once we arrived at the magnificent waterfalls, we immediately dove into the cold but refreshing water. We stayed there for about 40 minutes but we wished there was more time. After that, we went right to the mangroves where we learned how these massive trees help the environment by providing us clear air. The final activity we did this day was learning about the process of sugar cane production. We had the chance to make and taste sugar cane juice, and try products that contain sugar cane.
On the second day in Mata Oscura, we visited the home of a local where she taught us how to make delicious tamales, which we ate for dinner. At first, we ground corn using a special tool, then we kneaded the dough until it was the right texture. We then added red dye to make it a dark orange color. Next, we added the chicken filling and folded it, sealed it shut, and then wrapped it in a plantain leaf. We tied it with a string and then she cooked it so we could have it for dinner later that night.
Finally, on the fourth day there, we got the exciting news that a turtle was spotted nesting in a nearby place. We got sent over in two different groups because the turtle could be overwhelmed by too many people around. One by one we approached this animal slowly from behind to see her laying. It took her 30 minutes to lie 88 eggs, we then watched her slowly head back toward the ocean. When the turtle disappeared into the sea, then we all took a moment to appreciate what we just witnessed.
En nuestra segunda semana en Panamá, nos dirigimos a un lugar llamado Mata Oscura, ubicado en la provincia de Veraguas. Nos tomó 6 horas llegar allí desde el Valle de Antón. Nunca imaginamos las maravillosas experiencias que viviríamos en este mágico lugar. Participamos en diferentes actividades; sin embargo, nos gustaría hablar de las más interesantes. Las primeras actividades que destacaron ocurrieron el primer día; una de las actividades que también disfrutamos mucho fue cocinar nuestros propios tamales, y otro acontecimiento inesperado fue ver una tortuga anidando en la playa.
Para empezar, nos despertamos muy temprano en la mañana y después del desayuno, hicimos una caminata a las cascadas. Antes de meternos al agua conocimos al Sr. Secundino, una persona amable que nos llevó en una caminata informativa donde aprendimos sobre la fauna y flora panameña. Una vez llegamos a las magníficas cascadas, nos sumergimos inmediatamente en el agua fría pero refrescante. Nos quedamos allí durante unos 40 minutos, pero quisimos que hubiéramos tenido más tiempo allí. Después de eso, fuimos directamente a los manglares donde aprendimos cómo estos enormes árboles ayudan al medio ambiente brindándonos aire puro. La última actividad que hicimos este día fue aprender sobre el proceso de producción de la caña de azúcar. Tuvimos la oportunidad de hacer y probar el jugo de caña de azúcar y probar productos que contienen caña de azúcar.
El segundo día en Mata Oscura, visitamos la casa de una local donde nos enseñó a hacer unos deliciosos tamales, los cuales tuvimos de cena. Primero, molimos el maíz con una herramienta especial, luego amasamos hasta tener la textura adecuada. Luego agregamos tinte rojo para que sea de un color naranja oscuro. A continuación, agregamos el relleno de pollo y lo doblamos la masa, lo sellamos y luego lo envolvemos en una hoja de plátano. Por último, lo atamos con una cuerda y luego lo cocinó para que pudiéramos cenarlos más tarde esa noche.
Finalmente, en el cuarto día, recibimos la emocionante noticia de que una tortuga fue vista anidando en un lugar cercano. Nos enviaron en dos grupos diferentes porque la tortuga podría abrumarse por la cantidad de gente alrededor. Uno a uno nos acercamos a este animal lentamente por detrás para verla dejando sus huevos en la arena. Le tomó 30 minutos poner 88 huevos, luego la vimos regresar lentamente hacia el océano. Cuando la tortuga desapareció en el mar, todos nos tomamos un momento para apreciar lo que acabábamos de presenciar.
