First Days in Valle de Anton – Primeros días en Valle de Antón

We started our community service at a recycling center in Valle de Antón. There were many different stations. The first station sorted different plastics for recycling, the second station sorted aluminum cans; we enjoyed using a squisher machine to crush them. The final station worked at the glass recycling station where our task was to crush the glass and then move it to buckets to be transported to a bigger recycling center. Our AMIGOS group was very lucky, as the founders and co-founders all came to visit and were able to give us more insight into the recycling process in Panama. We learned about the importance of donating our recyclables as well as to what happens to the materials after they are processed.
Empezamos nuestro servicio comunitario en un centro de reciclaje en Valle de Antón. Había muchas estaciones diferentes. En la primera estación, agrupamos diferentes tipos de plásticos. En la segunda estación, agrupamos latas de aluminio; disfrutamos usando la máquina para aplastarlas. En la última estación, aplastamos el vidrio y lo colocamos en cestas para llevar a un centro de reciclaje más grande. Nuestro grupo de AMIGOS tuvo mucha suerte, porque algunos de los fundadores vinieron al centro y nos permitieron conocer mejor el proceso de reciclaje en Panamá. Aprendimos de la importancia de reciclar los materiales reciclables y qué pasa con los materiales después de que se procesan.
An important experience of every AMIGOS program is the opportunity to get to know the community they are visiting. Yesterday, it was Día del Niño, which celebrates children, because they are the future of the world. We participated by writing cards to other children in Spanish, wishing them a happy Día del Niño. Then, we got to know the staff of the hostel we are staying in, by asking them questions about their hobbies and the history of the hostel. Even after only 4 days in Panama, we have already gotten to know so much about the culture and customs of Panama!
Una experiencia importante de cada programa de AMIGOS es la oportunidad de conocer la comunidad anfitriona. Ayer fue el Día del Niño, un día especial que celebra a los niños porque son el futuro de nuestro mundo. Participamos en este día escribiendoles tarjetas a otros niños en español, deseándoles un feliz Día del Niño. Luego, conocimos mejor al personal del hostel con entrevistas sobre sus pasatiempos y la historia del hostel. Después de tan solo cuatro días en Panamá, ya hemos conocido mucho sobre la cultura y las costumbres de Panamá!
Lastly, the 17th was the day of the finals of the Copa de Oro, or Gold Cup. The final game was Mexico versus Panama. We set up couches in front of the TV, and at 6:45 we turned it on. We were obviously rooting for Panama, but then Mexico scored an 88th minute goal, finishing the game, and winning the Cup. Everyone was disappointed, but we loved getting to experience a part of the Panamanian spirit!
Por último, el 17 fue el día de las finales de la Copa de Oro. Panamá se enfrentó a México en la final. Pusimos unos sofás enfrente del televisor, y a las 18:45, lo prendimos. Obviamente íbamos todos por Panamá, pero México anotó un gol en el minuto 88, terminando el partido, y ganando la Copa. Todos se decepcionaron, pero nos encantó experimentar una parte del espíritu panameño.
