La Brunca 2023: MEET THE Team!

Hello everyone, I am Juan Díaz, the director of the La Brunca project and it is a great pleasure to introduce the work team that will carry out the program this year. For this, each person prepared their own presentation so that you can get to know each one of them!

Hola a todos, soy Juan Díaz el director del proyecto La Brunca y es un enorme placer presentar al equipo de trabajo que llevará adelante el programa este año 2023. Para esto cada quien preparó una propia presentación para que los vayan conociendo. 

Juan Francisco Díaz, Project Director

My name is Juan Francisco Díaz, in general I prefer to be called “Colo” since it is my nickname since I was a child and this “identity” is the one that has been with me for quite some time. I believe that defining yourself is limiting yourself and limiting others to discover who I am, but some things are clear to me and I would like to share them. 

I am an adventurous soul and it’s very difficult to stress myself out. For several years now I have been trying to find the opportunity to travel and get to know new places and landscapes, which have made me who I am today. I enjoy talking with people of all ages, from children to the elderly. I believe that people have a lot to teach and just as they have a lot to teach, we have a lot to learn, that’s why I always try to find moments to talk with new people. 

Since graduating with a major in Leisure Studies from the CUU (Catholic University of Uruguay) I have implemented play, recreation and gamification theory in various contexts such as education, business and tourism. This made me change my perspective regarding the power of gamification for improving people’s lives. Though play is generally understood as a “kids’ thing” I have come to realize that it is indeed a fundamental part of life of every human being, therefore I try to connect people in their daily life with the playful environment. I worked in a children’s club in a neighborhood with a critical context. That experience taught me a lot, I had to understand that the difference in realities is something that exists all the time and that there are things that we cannot change despite the fact that we want it. I will be the Project Director in “La Brunca” project in Costa Rica this year and I am very happy to be able to see the changes, be a part and see the fruits of this project in the volunteers and the community. 

 

Mi nombre es Juan Francisco Díaz, por lo general prefiero que me digan “Colo” ya que es mi sobrenombre desde que soy pequeño y esta “identidad” es la que me viene acompañando hace bastante tiempo. Considero que definirse es limitarse y limitar a las personas a que descubran quién soy, pero algunas cosas tengo claras y me gustaría compartirlas. 

Soy una persona aventurera y muy difícil de estresar. Desde hace ya varios años intento encontrar la oportunidad de viajar y conocer lugares y paisajes nuevos, esta sed de aventura me ha convertido en quien soy hoy en día. Disfruto de hablar con personas de todas las edades, desde niños pequeños hasta adultos mayores, creo que las personas tienen mucho que enseñar y así como tienen mucho que enseñar nosotros tenemos mucho que aprender por eso es que siempre que puedo logro encontrar momentos para conversar con personas nuevas. 

Culminé mis estudios en la Universidad Católica del Uruguay en la cual hice una licenciatura en Recreación Educativa, desde entonces he trabajado en diferentes lugares utilizando la recreación, la ludificación y el juego. Desde el ámbito empresarial, pasando por el turístico y el educativo. Esto hizo que cambiara mi perspectiva en cuanto al juego, por lo general se cree que el juego es “cosa de la infancia” y he llegado a entender que el juego es parte fundamental de la vida de todo ser humano, desde que nace hasta que muere. Por lo tanto intento que la gente conecte en su cotidianidad con el ámbito lúdico. Trabajé en un club de niños y niñas en un barrio de contexto crítico, esa experiencia me dejó un aprendizaje inmenso, tuve que entender que la diferencia de realidades es algo que existe todo el tiempo y que hay cosas que no podemos cambiar a pesar que lo queramos. Seré el Project Director en el proyecto de “La Brunca” en Costa Rica este año y estoy muy contento de poder ver los cambios, ser parte y ver los frutos de este proyecto en los voluntarios y voluntarias y la comunidad. 

 

Amelia Grabinski, Associate Project Director

Hi! My name is Amelia and I am the Associate Project Director for La Brunca this year. I am from Santa Cruz, California and I am currently a sophomore at San Diego State University where I am majoring in Restaurant Management and minoring in LGBT studies, and I hope to one day open my own bar. I participated in the AMIGOS Perez Zeledon project in Costa Rica in 2018 and the Cuenca, Ecuador project in 2019. In 2020, I was the Assistant Training Director for the Silicon Valley AMIGOS Chapter and I am currently the Training Director for the San Diego chapter. 

I play rugby for SDSU and I am also active in SDSU’s theater department. I am currently the stage manager for one of their shows! I am also a barista at a local coffee shop and spend a lot of time there making drinks and just hanging out. When I am not in class or working, I am usually at the beach with my friends or attending local concerts around the San Diego and Los Angeles area. I also love to read (mostly true crime and historical fiction) and paint and am always working on creative projects in my free time. I have a dog named Howie and a cat named Mr. Higgins! I can’t wait to get to country and meet everyone! 

 

Hola! Me llamo Amelia y soy la “Associate Project Director” para La Brunca este año. Soy de Santa Cruz, California y ahora soy una sophomore en San Diego State University (3er semestre) donde estudio administración de restaurantes y estudios de LGBT y espero abrir un bar en el futuro. Participé en AMIGOS en Perez Zeledón, Costa Rica en 2018 y en Cuenca, Ecuador en 2019. En 2020, fui la directora de capacitación para la red de AMIGOS de Silicon Valley y ahora, soy directora de capacitación para la red de AMIGOS de San Diego. 

Estoy en el equipo de rugby de SDSU y también participo en el departamento de teatro de SDSU. ¡Este año, soy la directora de escena de una función de teatro! También trabajo en un café en San Diego y paso mucho tiempo allí en mi tiempo libre. Cuando no trabajo y estudio, me gusta pasar tiempo con mis amigos en la playa e ir a conciertos en San Diego y Los Ángeles. Me gusta también leer (crimen y ficción histórica) y pintar y siempre tengo proyectos creativos en mi tiempo libre. Tengo un perrito se llama Howie y un gato se llama Señor Higgins. Estoy muy emocionada por conocer a todos y estar en Costa Rica! 

Rachel McGuire, Project Supervisor

Hello! My name is Rachel McGuire, and I am so excited to be working for AMIGOS this summer. I am from Houston, Texas, and I am currently a student at Louisiana State University. I am studying Economics and Spanish at LSU, and I will be graduating this December. I was a volunteer in 2018 on the Chimborazo project, and I loved my summer in Ecuador with AMIGOS. I also volunteered as a veteran trainer for the Houston Chapter, and I helped train the 2019 volunteers. Since then, I have always wanted to return as project staff, and I am so excited for the opportunity to do that this summer! 

In my free time, I like to read, crochet, and cook. My favorite genres are memoirs and fiction books, and I love second-hand bookstores. Crochet was my “quarantine” hobby, and since learning in 2020 I have not stopped. My favorite thing to make are hats for my cats! My boyfriend and I have four cats together, and they are named Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, and Queen B (after Beyoncé). I love their little hats, but my cats absolutely hate them. On campus, I have been involved in a number of organizations, most recently an ESL tutoring program called “Adelante”. With Adelante, I worked with mainly Spanish-speaking ESLs, working on their English skills. After having that experience, I am really excited to work for AMIGOS because I love working with and developing today’s youth. 

I am really looking forward to La Brunca this summer, and I cannot wait to meet all of the staff and volunteers! 

 

Hola! Me llamo Rachel McGuire y estoy muy emocionada de trabajar con AMIGOS este verano. Soy de Houston, Texas, y soy una estudiante en Louisiana State University. Estoy estudiando ciencias económicas y español en la LSU, y me voy a graduar en diciembre. Fui voluntaria en 2018 en el proyecto de Chimborazo, y me encantó pasar mi verano en Ecuador con AMIGOS! También fui entrenadora veterana para la red de Houston de AMIGOS, y ayudé a entrenar a los voluntarios de Houston en el 2019. Desde entonces, siempre he querido volver como personal del proyecto y estoy muy emocionada para la oportunidad este verano! 

En mi tiempo libre, me gusta leer, tejer, y cocinar. Mis géneros favoritos son las memorias y libros de ficción, y me encantan las librerías de segunda mano. Tejer era mi pasatiempo de la “cuarentena” y desde el año 2020 nunca paré. ¡Mi cosa favorita para tejer son sombreros para mis gatos! Junto con mi novio, tenemos 4 gatos, y ellos se llaman Desayuno, Almuerzo, Cena y Queen B (lleva su nombre de Beyoncé). Me encantan sus sombreritos, pero mis gatos los odian. En campus, he estado involucrada con muchas organizaciones y más recientemente un programa que apoya estudiantes ESL (inglés como segunda lengua). El programa se llama Adelante, y trabajé con hispanohablantes para mejorar sus habilidades al hablar inglés. Después de esta experiencia, estoy tan emocionada por trabajar con AMIGOS porque me gusta trabajar con y desarrollar a nuestros jóvenes!

Me emociona mucho el proyecto de La Brunca este verano, y no puedo esperar para conocer a todo el personal y a los voluntarios! 

Steven Carrillo, Project Supervisor

Hello! I am Steven, I am from San José, Costa Rica and I am 23 years old. I am currently in my last year of Public Administration degree and I am also studying International Relations. Living in a country with so much nature has made me love adventure, discovering new places and enjoying outdoor activities. I love to go hiking on weekends to a mountain, river, waterfall or volcano, or simply have a picnic outdoors. I love making new friends and learning about new cultures and people, but I also enjoy spending time alone with my pets and plants. I love music, reading, meditation and cooking.

I am passionate about volunteering, I remember my first experience at the age of 16 and since then I have always enjoyed connecting with new people, communities and social causes. I have worked with many non-profit organizations focused on issues of poverty, inequalities, sustainability, homelessness, informal settlements, homeless people, among others. In all these experiences I have strengthened my desire to be an agent of change and generate spaces and positive actions for society. This summer I hope to contribute towards our objectives in the Brunca Project, in addition, to share new experiences with great people guided to the well-being of people.

 

Hola! Soy Steven, soy de San José, Costa Rica y tengo 23 años. Actualmente estoy en mi último año de la carrera Administración Pública y también estudio Relaciones Internacionales. Vivir en un país con tanta naturaleza ha hecho que me encante la aventura, conocer lugares nuevos y disfrutar actividades al aire libre. Me encanta ir de hiking los fines de semana a alguna montaña, río, cascada o volcán, o simplemente hacer un picnic al aire libre. Me encanta hacer nuevas amistades y conocer nuevas culturas y personas, pero también disfruto mi tiempo a solas con mis mascotas y plantas. Me encanta la música, la lectura, la meditación y la cocina.

Me apasiona el voluntariado, recuerdo mi primera experiencia a los 16 años y desde entonces siempre disfruto de conectar con nuevas personas, comunidades y causas sociales. He trabajado con muchas organizaciones sin fines de lucro enfocadas en temas de pobreza, desigualdades, sostenibilidad, falta de vivienda, asentamientos informales, personas en condición de calle, entre otros. En todas estas experiencias he fortalecido mis ganas por ser un agente de cambio y generar espacios y acciones positivas para la sociedad. Este verano espero aportar hacia nuestros objetivos en el proyecto La Brunca, además, compartir nuevas experiencias con personas geniales guiadas al bienestar de las personas.
