La Sierra 2023: Meet the Team

Welcome to the La Sierra Project 2023! We are so excited to have you here! My name is Vanessa Cadena, and I have the pleasure of being this year’s Project Director for the La Sierra program. I’m thrilled to introduce you to the AMIGOS staff team who will be working closely with all of you and making sure this program is a success and a great experience for you.

¡Bienvenidos al Proyecto La Sierra 2023! ¡Estamos muy emocionados de tenerlos aquí! Hola desde Ecuador, mi nombre es Vanessa Cadena, y tengo el placer de ser la Directora de Proyectos de este año del programa La Sierra. Estoy encantada de presentarles al equipo de AMIGOS que trabajará de cerca con todos ustedes y se asegurará de que este programa sea un éxito y una gran experiencia para ustedes.

 

Vanessa Cadena, Project Director

I started working with AMIGOS in August 2022 as the Gap Year Program Coordinator, and I am very excited to be the Program Director for La Sierra program this year. I have a bachelor’s degree in Political Science and International Relations and a master’s degree in International Cooperation with a focus on Development Management.

I am very passionate about working with NGOs, and in recent years I have been fortunate to work in organizations that are in charge of empowering young people to be leaders and agents of change. Serving others has had a huge impact on me and has helped me to be the person I am today, and I am pleased to know that I can motivate other people to do the same. Also, as an Ecuadorian I am very excited to be able to show the beauties and opportunities that my country has!

 

Empecé a trabajar con AMIGOS en agosto de 2022 como Coordinadora del Programa de Año Sabático y estoy muy emocionada de ser la Directora del Programa La Sierra de este año. Tengo una licenciatura en Ciencias Políticas y Relaciones Internacionales y una maestría en Cooperación Internacional con enfoque en Gestión de Proyectos de Desarrollo.

Me apasiona mucho trabajar con organizaciones sin fines de lucro, y en los últimos años he tenido la fortuna de trabajar en organizaciones que se encargan de empoderar a jóvenes para que sean líderes y agentes de cambio. Servir a los demás ha tenido un gran impacto en mí y me ha ayudado a ser la persona que soy hoy, y me complace saber que puedo motivar a otras personas a hacer lo mismo. Además, como ecuatoriana me emociona mucho poder mostrar las bellezas y oportunidades que tiene mi país.

 

Obek Falck, Associate Project Director

 

Obek is from Tegucigalpa, Honduras and is joining the AMIGOS team for the first time! She is very happy to be a part of this amazing organization and she is excited to contribute to it. She has been part of NGOs before, such as the scout movement and TECHO, which has allowed her to broaden her knowledge as a leader and also as a good volunteer. In recent years, Obek has traveled to many countries in Latin America, she went to Guatemala and Costa Rica to build houses with TECHO and went to Panama 3 times to participate in the Inter-American Leadership Training and then as staff for the same course.

She is very passionate about the approach and work perspective of AMIGOS in Ecuador – the work is oriented around nature and cultural development and, it is one of the things she likes the most in her daily life. She studies Environmental Engineering where she reviews aspects of nature, and how they can properly adapt to the daily activities of humans, which is why she is very excited about the work ahead!

 

Obek es de Tegucigalpa Honduras y se está uniendo por primera vez al equipo de AMIGOS! Está muy feliz de ser parte de esta increíble organización y está muy emocionada de contribuir a la misma. Ella ha sido parte de ONG antes, como el movimiento scout y TECHO, lo que le ha permitido ampliar sus conocimientos como líder y también como una buena voluntaria. En los últimos años, Obek ha viajado por muchos países de América Latina, ella fue a Guatemala y Costa Rica para construir casas con TECHO y fue a Panamá 3 veces para participar en el Entrenamiento Interamericano de Liderazgo y luego como personal para el mismo curso.

Ella es muy apasionada del enfoque y perspectiva de trabajo de AMIGOS, en Ecuador el trabajo está orientado con la naturaleza y el desarrollo cultural y en lo personal, es una de las cosas que más le gusta en su vida diaria. Ella estudia Ingeniería Ambiental por lo que revisa aspectos de la naturaleza y cómo pueden adaptarse adecuadamente a las actividades diarias de los humanos, por lo que le entusiasma mucho el trabajo que hay por delante.

 

Ximena Polanco, Project Supervisor

 

Ximena is a first-year student at the University of Texas at Austin, and she is studying to be an ER nurse. Prior to her experience with AMIGOS, she was always involved with leadership organizations such as the National Honor Society and the Beta Club at her school. Both of these programs allowed her to take action and solve problems within her school. Being part of organizations like this made it very clear to her that it is very important to know how to be a good leader in any situation.

During the summer of her junior year of high school, she volunteered with AMIGOS in Costa Rica and had the time of her life. Today she finds herself very excited to work with AMIGOS again due to how amazing the organization is and how life-changing and original each experience with them is. During her time in Costa Rica, she always looked up to her project staff for making things interesting and fun and hopes to do the same for the participants this summer. Over the summer, she hopes to identify her personal strengths and make lifelong connections with others, while also enjoying everything that Ecuador has to offer!

Ximena es una estudiante de primer año en la Universidad de Texas en Austin, y está estudiando para ser una enfermera de emergencias. Antes de su experiencia con AMIGOS, ella siempre estuvo involucrada con organizaciones de liderazgo como la Sociedad Nacional de Honor y el Club Beta de su escuela. Ambos de estos programas le permitieron tomar acción y poder solucionar problemas dentro de su escuela. Al ser parte de organizaciones así le dejaron muy claro que es muy importante saber cómo ser un buen líder en cualquier situación.

Durante el verano de su tercer año de secundaria, fue voluntaria con AMIGOS en Costa Rica y tuvo el mejor tiempo de su vida. Hoy se encuentra super emocionada de volver a trabajar con AMIGOS porque ella vio de primera mano que tan maravillosa es la organización y que tan impactantes son las experiencias. Durante su tiempo en Costa Rica, ella siempre admiraba como el personal del proyecto hacia las cosas interesantes y divertidas y, espera hacer lo mismo este año para sus participantes del proyecto. Durante el verano, espera poder identificar sus fortalezas personales y poder seguir perfeccionándolas durante el trayecto, además de poder disfrutar de todo lo que Ecuador tiene para ofrecer mientras crea conexiones significativas!

 

 

Aleska Mina, Project Supervisor

 

Aleska Mina is a 24-year-old Afro-Ecuadorian woman. This is her first time working at AMIGOS and she is very excited to be a part of the team. She is an industrial designer and currently she makes designs that represent the Afro-Ecuadorian culture, empowering black women and revaluing their perception of beauty. She has plans for the future to be able to work together with the Afro community, especially with young women, to preserve ancestral knowledge and promote its development. For this reason, working at AMIGOS will allow her to learn more about community work and the contribution that she will make working as a team. She lived in Argentina for two years and was able to belong to the volunteer team at the University of Palermo. It was a very enriching experience, since the work mainly focused on the well-being of low-income children and young people, providing them with support and follow-up to achieve their quality of life.  

 

Aleska Mina es una mujer afroecuatoriana de 24 años. Es su primera vez trabajando en AMIGOS y está muy emocionada de ser parte del equipo. Ella es diseñadora industrial y actualmente realiza diseños que representan su cultura afroecuatoriana empoderando a las mujeres negras y revalorizando la percepción de su de belleza. Tiene planes a futuro de poder trabajar conjuntamente con la comunidad afro, en especial con jóvenes mujeres, para prevalecer saberes ancestrales y promover su desarrollo. Por eso, trabajar en AMIGOS le permitirá conocer el trabajo comunitario más a fondo y la aportación que realizará trabajando en equipo. Además, le permitirá seguir aprendiendo de los jóvenes y de nuevas culturas. Aleska vivió dos años en Argentina y pudo pertenecer al equipo de voluntarios de la Universidad de Palermo. Fue una experiencia muy enriquecedora, pues trabajó en su mayoría enfocándose en el bienestar de niños, niñas y jóvenes de escasos recursos, brindándoles apoyo y seguimiento para lograr su calidad de vida.
